    What are the chances of the Phils signing Werth to an extension and eating Ibanez's salary for a year so they have Victorino, Werth and Brown in 2011??

    Dave, first I want to compliment you and your blog, you do a great job, and frankly I don't care how ugly your shoes are. RE: Howard's new stance and strikeouts. Mike Schmidt very late in his career changed his approach at the plate, cut down his strikeouts and even hit .300 for the first time I think in his last MVP year. Maybe I have the seasons mixed up, but it was definitely in his late 30's. Chipper Jones hit .367 two seasons ago, also very late in his career by just being far more selective. Of course injuries limited his late career, but I wonder why Howard couldn't just lay off of those breaking pitches out of the zone, and take more walks, when he has Werth, Ibanez, Victorino hitting behind him. That's a lot of firepower. It won't hurt his power numbers. He is clearly remaking his swing to go up the middle and to left again, which is what he did in 2005, and 2006. I think he will surprise people with his hitting this year because he is determined, just like he did with his defense last year. He pushes himself to learn and has a high standard. Yes?

    I think a major key to Howard's batting average and patience at the plate is related to the on-base percentage of the people batting ahead of him. He needs Rollins & Polanco on base so that he'll get some pitches to hit.
