The Phillies have signed five players to minor league contracts -- outfielder Freddy Guzman, righthanders J.C. Ramirez, Drew Naylor and David Herndon and lefthander Mike Zagurski.

Guzman, 29, spent last season with the Triple A affiliates of Baltimore, Seattle, Boston and the New York Yankees. In 101 games, he hit .223 with two homers and 17 RBI but stole 45 bases in 54 attempts. A switch-hitter, he has spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues with a .211 average in 47 games.

Ramirez was acquired from the Mariners in the Cliff Lee deal.

Naylor, an Australian, has been in the Phillies system after signing last February.

Herndon was acquired in the Rule IV draft at the winter meetings.

Zagurski spent last season at Clearwater and Reading as he rebounded from Tommy John surgery.

You just know that some dim bulb out their in Philliesland is wondering why the team didn't use the money they're giving Freddy Guzman to keep Cliff Lee.

Do you guys really care that much about the minor leagues??? This is not someone who will play in Philly so why make such comments. This is just filling out the minor league rosters. The Phils have the least amount of holes/question marks for the 2010 season in the NL. Just enjoy this while it lasts.

.223 avg in Triple A? Are you kidding me? What a waste of a roster spot. Ruben will have this team in the tank in a couple years. He made a historically bad deal with Cliff Lee, he's not gonna sign Werth, and now he is signing below average journeymen.

no problem with Guzman. he'll perform OK in the minors, and get a Sept call up once rosters expand to provide some speed off the bench, which we currently lack.

Seriously, how do Cliff Lee comments even make their way into a post like this? GET OVER IT! MOVE TO SEATTLE IF YOU MISS HIM THAT MUCH! If the Cliff Lee deal was "historically bad", is the Roy Halladay deal "historically good"? Before you trash Amaro, remember that he's the one who made the deal to get Lee in the first place last year. And you were probably ripping him then for not getting Halladay. This team is not the Yankees--only the Yankees can unconsciously spend money like the Yankees. Amaro's got almost the entire core signed for another 2-3 years. And if Werth goes (again, is he going to pay another guy $15 million a year--maybe if he deals Ibanez, a good signing by Amaro by the way), then that's why you have Domonic Brown. Can't keep all these guys for $15-$20 million a year. Get over Cliff Lee, enjoy Roy Halladay and another run at a World Series, and stop complaining about Amaro. They're in better shape than just about every team in baseball. Rant over.
