CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Phillies intended for Miguel Gonzalez to make his Grapefruit League debut Thursday, but manager Ryne Sandberg said Gonzalez will be delayed until Saturday because he fell ill.

Gonzalez did not participate in the team's workout Monday. He did some light work in the morning and left the complex as his teammates practiced.

Sandberg said Gonzalez will throw another side session before pitching Saturday against the Yankees in Tampa. The Phillies are preaching patience with their $12 million import from Cuba before games start. His competitive experience over the last two years was limited.
