Lenny Dykstra needs new material

'Nails' recycles same stories about umpires and steroids that he did last year.

LENNY DYKSTRA needs a new shtick.

On Tuesday, Nails told Fox's Colin Cowherd that while playing for the Phillies he blackmailed umpires during the 1993 season in which he led the majors in walks.

He also said that in 1990 - his second season with the Phightins - he began talking steroids prescribed by a "hillbilly doctor."

Hmmm. Not really news, considering he said the same things to Mike Missanelli last year.

So why rehash it with Cowherd? Well, Lenny said he's writing a book so maybe he's seeking a little publicity.

On Tuesday, Dykstra once again said that during '93 he hired private investigators to dig up information about umps that he could use to his advantage.

"I said, 'I need these umpires,' so what do I do? I just pulled a half-million bucks out and hired a private investigation team. Their blood is just as red as ours. Some of them like women, some of them like men, some of them gamble . . . It wasn't a coincidence, do you think, that I led the league in walks the next two years (actually just '93), was it? Fear does a lot to a man."

Lenny also talked about how and why he obtained steroids.

"Did I want to take steroids? No," he said. "But I literally could not make it through a full season playing every day . . . It wasn't that I forgot how to hit. I was just too weak. So I needed something to keep me strong throughout the season. So in my contract year, 1990, I didn't know what to do. I was living in Mississippi and I just called up some hillbilly doctor there and I made an appointment.

"I went to the library and I found I needed Deca Durabolin. The doctor said, 'OK' and he writes (the prescription)."

Great stories Lenny, let's hope the book has something in it we don't already know.

Supposedly, it's about how he shouldn't have gone to prison for bankruptcy fraud and grand-theft auto charges.

An ex-con who thinks he was railroaded? Where have we heard that before?
