Bowa talks to Marlins about managing job

Phillies bench coach Larry Bowa interviewed with the Miami Marlins on Monday regarding their managerial job, according to two baseball sources.

Phillies bench coach Larry Bowa interviewed with the Miami Marlins on Monday regarding their managerial job, according to baseball sources.

Bowa, 69, was one of four coaches the Phillies invited back for next season under manager Pete Mackanin. The former manager of the Phillies (2001-2004) and San Diego Padres (1987-88) has served as the team's bench coach the last two seasons.

Marlins manager Dan Jennings, the team's general manager until he unconventionally occupied the skipper's office beginning in May, is expected to return to the team's front office. The Marlins had already interviewed Bo Porter and Manny Acta for their managerial gig. Each, like Bowa, has major-league managerial experience. Porter, 43, the third-base coach for the Atlanta Braves, managed the Houston Astros for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Acta, 46, previously managed the Washington Nationals and Cleveland Indians.

In addition to Bowa, the Phillies also offered contracts for 2016 to hitting coach Steve Henderson, pitching coach Bob McClure and first-base coach Juan Samuel. Assistant hitting coach John Mizerock and bullpen coach Rod Nichols were the only coaches the Phillies let go after the season finale.

Herrera honored

Odubel Herrera was announced Monday as the Phillies' nominee for the Hank Aaron Award, which since 1999 has recognized the most outstanding performer in each league. A nominee is selected from each of the 30 teams. Herrera, a Rule 5 draft pick in December, batted .297 and recorded a team-best 30 doubles, the most for a Phillies rookie since Scott Rolen in 1997.
