Ryan Madson is discovering there is life after the Phillies.

Madson, who pitched for the Phillies from 2003 to 2011, has become a key bullpen addition for the Kansas City Royals. After being sidelined by Tommy John surgery and other arm problems for three seasons, Madson has regained his form.

Madson has appeared in 17 games and has a 1.83 ERA, the best of the reliever's career. He has struck out 20 with just four walks.

With the Royals in first place in the AL Central, Madson, 34, is happy to be back in the game.

"Everybody in this bullpen has good stuff. They pitch lights-out," he said. "You have to keep up. But it's a good thing."

Washington returns

Ron Washington is back with the Oakland Athletics. The team announced Washington is rejoining the A's as a major-league coach to help with the team's defense after nearly eight years as manager of the Texas Rangers.

Washington, a coach with the A's for 11 years before going to Texas, will join the team for Friday night's game at Tampa Bay.
