The San Diego Padres pulled off another blockbuster trade Sunday, acquiring closer Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton from the Atlanta Braves for outfielders Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin, plus two minor-leaguers and a draft pick.

The trade announced Sunday reunites Upton with his younger brother, Justin, who was obtained by the Padres in one of several trades general manager A.J. Preller made in a dramatic December makeover. Justin Upton is San Diego's starting leftfielder.

The Padres had a glut of outfielders after Preller obtained Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil Myers in December.

Kimbrel has had at least 42 saves in each of the last four seasons.

Tomas to the minors

Yasmany Tomas was sent to the minors Saturday night by the Arizona Diamondbacks after the $68.5 million free agent from Cuba failed to make their opening-day roster.

Arizona also released veteran outfielder Cody Ross, discarding yet another player with a hefty salary. Ross was due to make $9.5 million this season in the final year of a $26 million, three-year contract. His deal included a $9.5 million club option for 2016 with a $1 million buyout.

Rosters take shape

The Dodgers will have three rookies on their opening day roster, including Joc Pederson, who is expected to start in center field.

Pitchers Yimi Garcia and Pedro Baez join Pederson as rookies on the 25-man roster.

Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Brandon McCarthy and Brett Anderson make up the starting rotation. Joining Garcia and Baez in the bullpen are Chris Hatcher, J.P. Howell, Juan Nicasio, Joel Peralta and Paco Rodriguez.

In addition to Pederson, the projected starters are Yasmani Grandal, Adrian Gonzalez, Howie Kendrick, Jimmy Rollins, Juan Uribe, Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford.

The Reds put starter Homer Bailey on the 15-day disabled list. Lefthanded reliever Sean Marshall and outfielder Jason Bourgeois were both on the 60-day DL. Cincinnati added starter Jason Marquis, reliever Kevin Gregg, infielder Chris Dominguez and outfielder Brennan Boesch to the 25-man roster for opening day.

Jayson Werth, Anthony Rendon, Denard Span, fourth outfielder Nate McLouth and eighth-inning setup man Casey Janssen are among six players put on the 15-day disabled list by the Washington Nationals.

Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians finalized a $38.5 million, five-year contract that gives the AL Cy Young Award winner security.

Kluber will make $1 million this season under the agreement. His deal escalates to $13 million by 2019 and includes club options in 2020 and 2021.

Cleveland also is also working on a long-term deal for Carlos Carrasco, its No. 2 pitcher.
