Phillies Notes: Hamels irked by plate umpire's calls

ST. LOUIS - Cole Hamels appeared irked on the mound, and since the Phillies' lefthander declined to speak with reporters after Saturday's 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, catcher Carlos Ruiz provided some insight.

ST. LOUIS - Cole Hamels appeared irked on the mound, and since the Phillies' lefthander declined to speak with reporters after Saturday's 4-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, catcher Carlos Ruiz provided some insight.

"He felt the umpire [Larry Vanover] was a little inconsistent," Ruiz said, "but he was still throwing good pitches and getting people out."

Hamels struck out eight but walked five. He threw 120 pitches, 75 for strikes. The five walks tied a season high and matched the total he had in his previous three starts.

The game was tied at 1 before Hamels allowed two of the Cardinals' three eighth-inning runs.

Nola's debut

Aaron Nola, the Phillies' first-round draft pick earlier this month, will make his professional debut Monday when he starts for single-A Clearwater at Lakeland, Phillies director of player development Joe Jordan confirmed Saturday night.

Winning for Grandma

A.J. Burnett got some extra inspiration in pitching his first complete game since last Aug. 4 during Friday's 5-1 win over the Cardinals.

Burnett's grandmother, Florence Szparaga, came from Little Rock, Ark., to see him pitch live for the first time ever.

"It was extra special, definitely," said Burnett, who recorded the 24th complete game of his career while throwing 111 pitches.

Afterward, he had a present for her.

"It was awesome that she was here, and I got the game ball for her," he said. "When I gave her the game ball, she was beside herself."

Strange fact

Jimmy Rollins extended his hitting streak to 15 games with an eighth-inning single and now has exactly one hit in each of the games. He is 15 for 60 (.250).

Rollins knocked in the Phillies' lone run with a third-inning sacrifice fly. In a quirkier stat, that gave him a sacrifice fly in consecutive games for only the second time in his career, and first since June 29-30, 2001, against the Florida Marlins.

Revere update

Ben Revere has not started since Monday due to a bruised left knee, but has made two pinch-hitting appearances. He didn't play on Saturday.

Revere said it's important to get the swelling out of his knee, and he hopes he is back soon.

"It is hard to get flexibility in that knee," he said. "It really takes away from my speed game, and we are trying to get all the fluid out of my knee so I can feel comfortable out on the field."
