Touch 'Em All: Oakland signs Doolittle to five-year deal
Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal begins with the 2014 season and extends through 2018. Doolittle's previous one-year contract was worth $505,000 in the major leagues and $295,500 in the minors. He would have been eligible for arbitration for the first time next winter.
A bit of history
Jon Tinker, a grandson of former Cubs Hall of Fame shortstop Joe Tinker of Tinker to Evers to Chance fame, threw out the ceremonial first pitch in Chicago for the Cubs game with the Reds.
On the move
The Mets traded slumping first baseman Ike Davis to the Pirates for minor-league pitcher Zack Thornton and a player to be named. The Mets announced the move just minutes before they played Atlanta. Davis was on the field during batting practice earlier in the day.
The Rangers placed struggling pitcher Tanner Scheppers on the 15-day DL with inflammation in his right elbow. An MRI found no structural damage, but Scheppers will rest his arm for 10 days.
Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is set to come off the 15-day disabled list Sunday, according to MLB.com. Teixeira has been on the DL with a strained right hamstring. If he is activated Sunday for a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, that means he spent the minimum required amount of time on the 15-day DL.
On his way out to the field for pregame batting practice, Jason Kipnis hung a hard right in the Indians clubhouse to give Jason Giambi a big hug.
"Great to see you," Kipnis told Cleveland's respected designated hitter.
"You, too, little brother," Giambi said.
Big 'G' is back with the Indians. Almost.
Sidelined since spring training by a fractured rib, Giambi has been cleared to play and is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list Monday, when the Indians open a four-game series with the Royals.
