Former Slippery Rock University standout Matt Adams made major-league history late Wednesday night when he became the first player to hit two home runs in the 14th inning or later in one game, according to Elias Sports.
Adams, who has appeared in 85 games this season for St. Louis, was a midgame substitute for injured first baseman Allen Craig. He snapped an 0-for-17 slump when he put the Cardinals up, 4-3, with a solo shot in the 14th inning in Cincinnati. The Reds tied the game in the bottom of the 14th, but his second homer - in the 16th - accounted for a 5-4 victory.
Adams, who is from Philipsburg, Centre County, turned 25 on Saturday.

A Milwaukee restaurant group is ending its ties to Brewers slugger Ryan Braun, who is suspended for doping.
SURG Restaurant Group said it will change the name of the 8-Twelve MVP Bar & Grill in the suburb of Brookfield. Braun's jersey number is 8, while 12 refers to the number worn by Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Braun said he supported the decision.
Kershaw honored
Los Angeles Dodgers lefthander Clayton Kershaw is the winner of the 2013 Branch Rickey Award for his community work.
At 25, Kershaw is the youngest person to receive the award. He and his wife, Ellen, founded Kershaw's Challenge, a foundation that seeks to transform at-risk children and communities.
