Phillies Notes: Catcher Rupp among likely call-ups for Phils

NEW YORK - When Pete Orr jogged to left field Wednesday, he became the 49th Phillies player in 2013, which equals the number of players used a season ago.

The Phillies have seen just about every man worthy of a major-league promotion, which makes the expansion of rosters in September somewhat anticlimactic.

There will be important additions, most likely after triple-A Lehigh Valley's season ends Monday. The most intriguing could be Cameron Rupp, a former third-round pick who has played his way to the top of the organization's depth chart at catcher.

Rupp turns 25 on Sept. 28. He started the season at double-A Reading and split catching duties with Sebastian Valle. His production dipped just slightly after moving to triple A. He has 14 home runs and a .761 OPS overall.

"He's come a long way this year," interim manager Ryne Sandberg said. "We'll see if he's one of the guys. He's had a fine year. It's good to hear."

Two infielders, Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez, are sure to earn promotions. Both spent time in the majors earlier this season. Hernandez has played center and right field for the IronPigs as the Phillies attempt to create a utility player.

Galvis could spell both Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley down the stretch. Barring an offensive renaissance, his future role is unclear. Galvis hit just .251 with a .641 OPS in 56 games with the IronPigs.

Spare parts such as Michael Martinez and Steve Susdorf could return. Both have succeeded in the minors. Tyson Gillies, an outfielder on the 40-man roster, was placed on Lehigh Valley's disabled list Wednesday with right hamstring tightness.

Phillippe Aumont has failed to throw strikes in the minors since his demotion in early July. He has struck out 26 and walked 20 in 221/3 innings. Lefthander Mauricio Robles, a waiver acquisition from Seattle last winter, has a 1.46 ERA. He, too, lacks command. He has walked 30 in 37 innings. Still, with so much uncertainty in the bullpen, those two could receive looks.

The organization's top prospect, Maikel Franco, will not be considered. He will play winter ball in the Dominican Republic.

The Phillies were shut out Tuesday for the 13th time in 2013, their most since 1989 (16 shutouts). Only Miami has been blanked more times (15) than the Phillies this season. . . . Lefthander Joe Savery was activated from the disabled list and optioned to triple-A Lehigh Valley.
