1 Clearwater righthander Kenny Giles, who twice suffered oblique injuries this season, is again hitting his stride for the Threshers. In 15 relief appearances covering 171/3 innings heading into the weekend, Giles, 22, was 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA, 25 strikeouts, and 10 walks. He is The Inquirer's No. 19-ranked Phillies prospect.

"He is back healthy, and throwing hard," said Joe Jordan, director of player development. "His velocity and slider are good and we will get him as many innings as we can."

2 Reading reliever Mike Nesseth said he couldn't be happier for third baseman Cody Asche, his former University of Nebraska teammate. "It's definitely inspiring to see what he has done," Nesseth said.

The 25-year-old righthander could someday join Asche on the Phillies. He has been closing for Reading and has pitched well since being promoted from Clearwater May 2. Nesseth had a 1.62 ERA, a 1.15 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched), and seven saves in 31 relief appearances entering the weekend.

3 Even though he didn't earn a berth on the New York-Penn all-star team, 19-year-old righthander Drew Anderson has enjoyed a strong season for Williamsport. A 21st-round pick in 2012, Anderson was 5-2 with a 2.24 ERA in his first 10 starts for the Crosscutters.

"He has been so consistent, has a good fastball-slider-change-up, and I really like his poise on the mound," said Williamsport manager Nelson Prada.

4 Lehigh Valley lefthander Adam Morgan, 23, has pitched well since coming off the disabled list July 22. He had missed nearly two months with a left- shoulder strain. On Tuesday Morgan pitched five shutout innings and threw 71 pitches in a 4-1 win over Charlotte. Morgan is 1-1 with a 1.08 ERA in his last four starts. He was a pitcher the Phillies were considering bringing up before his injury.

"We're limiting him to how much we want him to go," Jordan said. "It's been good to see the quality way he is throwing."

5 With the announcement that catcher Tommy Joseph won't play the rest of the year because of concussion symptoms from a May incident, a position that once was an organizational strength now has questions.

Reading catcher Sebastian Valle was batting just .211 entering the weekend. One player who could make an impact is Cameron Rupp, who heading into the weekend was hitting .250 with four home runs and 18 RBIs in 132 at-bats since being promoted from Reading to Lehigh Valley. Rupp is a strong defensive catcher and had batted .306 with two home runs and six RBIs in his last 10 games.
