The sun showed up. That was a positive.

Oh, and Joe Piscopo looks pretty good. Not sure where he's been, but remember when he did that Sinatra impersonation? That was really funny stuff.

None of the paratroopers broke anything.

So the Phillies home opener could have been a lot worse. You know it's a rough day when the lingering highlight is a few thousand ninth-inning wise guys sarcastically waving rally towels as if it were a tight playoff game. Hey, if their team can't entertain them, they'll entertain themselves.

The best thing about it, for all concerned, is that it's over with. Done. There will be no more forced marches through the bleachers and military flyovers and long introductions and baseballs delivered by daredevils and ceremonial first pitches by the ballplayers and SNL cast members of yesteryear.

Opening Night in Atlanta is history. The home opener is in the books. Now all that's left on the to-do list is the 158-game remainder of the long, long season.

The bad news: The Phillies didn't exactly overshadow all the pomp of these first few games with their baseball prowess.

"This one's kind of a tough one," Ryan Howard said. "I know it's early, but it's tough. You don't want to lose your opener like that. . . . You get out to a 4-0 start, and you let it go."

The good news: There's still a wee bit of time - about six months - to make up for it. The Phillies have a long history of hideous home openers. They also have a long history of hideous seasons. But those two things are not inextricably linked. They have looked good in the opener and stunk out the ballpark all summer. They have bombed on Day 1 and gone on to have good years.

As openers go, this was an especially grueling one. Howard, who is usually all about keeping things in perspective, seemed particularly annoyed by this loss. And no wonder.

For four innings, it was exactly what any team would want. The Phillies jumped to a 4-0 lead. The triumvirate of Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Howard produced the first run with consecutive singles. Dom Brown blasted a home run. Ben Revere made a great diving catch.

Then it was 4-2. Still OK. Then Kyle Kendrick loaded the bases, and Jeremy Horst came in and gave up a three-run triple. Then Horst loaded the bases, and Chad Durbin came in and gave up a three-run triple.

"The first four innings were good," manager Charlie Manuel said. "The last five, of course, they got really ugly and out of hand."

As another Charles might have put it: It was the best of times, it was the Horst of times.

The pitching has been horrendous in three of the four games. The Phillies have lost all three. No shock there. But the bigger issue going forward is the offense. You can expect better outings from Cole Hamels and hope for improvement from Roy Halladay. But a lineup that shrivels up after getting that 4-0 lead, failing to produce a single hit off a series of Royals relievers, is just not going to cut it.

"We've got to finish teams off," Howard said. "We can't let off the gas. I don't want to say we let off the gas. Those guys just came back swinging. Sometimes that happens in baseball. We got beat today."

They left nine men on base, which is a lot considering they had exactly one baserunner after the third inning. They left a total of 47 men on base in three games in Atlanta. In their lone, lonely victory, they produced just two runs for Cliff Lee.

The Phillies may not be the run factory they were in 2007 and 2008, but they're going to have to do better than that. That falls on Utley, Howard and Michael Young, the middle of the order.

At some point, Delmon Young and Carlos Ruiz will be back. That can't hurt. But if Delmon Young is the cavalry, then things really are bleak.

"I like our ball club," Manuel said. "We've got to improve on how we played today, for sure."

Getting worse would take some doing. Fortunately, the schedule provides 158 opportunities to get better.

Honestly I am getting tired of all the cliche's the Phillies players and brass throw around these days. Starting with the silly stuff, why did we even need Joe Piscopo at the game? Schmidt and Brett were sufficient for "first ball" purposes. They are two guys who really are "class acts." We have enough clowns in the bullpen without bringing in an over the hill comedian. But I digress.

The TV announcers look stupid when they go overboard being "homers." Nix makes a totally lousy throw home on a hit to right that was (a) 8 to 10 feet short of home plate and (b) 5 to 8 feet up the line toward third base. It wasn't even close. Wheeler sounded like Baghdad Bob trying to convince us that the throw hit wet grass which "slowed it down." Give me a break.

Horst, Durbn, Valdes should all be in Double A ball. They are not currently MLB caliber pitchers. Nix is a "worst case" outfielder. You would probably get as much of a bat with a little less power but much better fielding if you stuck Freddy Galvis out there. Dominic Brown looks much better at the plate. He still looks awkward as an outfielder and that will cost runs. Usually at the wrong time.

Finally, if the Phillies make one change it ought to be to replace Dubee as pitching coach. I have become convinced that he has no clue how to handle the egos of the so-called "aces" while - at the same time - mentoring the younger pitchers as they struggle. He's the wrong guy, in the wrong place, at the wrong time.

Breaking news: our bullpen is horrendous. Either the Royals and Braves have world-class bullpens, with seemingly everyone who can throw 95 , get key strikeouts, and throw strikes at will...or the Phillies are just flat our horrible. This was a terrible loss. Manuel should be fired. He left Kendrick in for two batters too long when I from my tv set could tell he was weakening once his pitch count got in the high 70s. He then brings in Horst...who gives up a triple and reloads the bases. He then brings in CHAD DURBIN, the man who cost us the series in the 2010 playoffs against the Giants by failing in the 7th inning, and Chad Durbin who throws less hard than Roy Halladay, and pitches waist high on everything, is meant to strike someone out with bases loaded and no outs. You bring in Aumont or Bastardo if you need a strike out. Heck, you bring in STUTES, you don't bring in CHAD DURBIN!!!

I saw the Dickens pun on Twitter about 10 times during today's game... get some original material. At least entertain us poor fans who had to suffer through that today.

Look, Nix played right and made a throw to home plate that I, at 70 years of age, could have thrown better.....and in left, we've got a guy who has brain lock diving to catch a ball with the bases loaded. And in middle relief we've got guys with ERA's of 10-20. This is Ruben Amaro's doings. He's the guy on the hot seat here this year.

The Phillies are doing exactly what they did last year. They are masters of leaving men on base.

Last fall, I can't remember now who it was, was evaluating Phillie players.

When it came to Valdes, he said he probably is a decent pitcher to have in yor minor league system, but he does'nt have major league stuff.

You think anything has changed since then !

The fact he included Young as one of the guys it falls on tells you how bad the bottom half of this lineup is right now. If Brown is for real, if Ruiz can hold on to some of the gains he made last year, and D Young can provide 20 HR power the Phils might be able to fight for a playoff spot. However, with Kendrick, Lannan, and a lessoned Halladay they need a good lineup from top to bottom to even have a chance at the wild card. Sad that it's come to this, and Amaro has no chance of rebuilding this team.

By the end of April, the Phils could easily be 12 games behind Washington. Why does Amaro still have a job?

Let's not get carried away with the Nationals, @farley. They swept the low-A Marlins, in DC, a team with Polanco -- Polanco! -- batting cleanup. First game against a Major League team (the Reds) and the Nats get beat, 15-0.

But, our team goes from a decent spring to lost like a light switch. I agree on Dubee: He should not, cannot, skate from a bullpen that was bad last year, through August, and is picking up where it left off. If Thompson and Gross get fired because we can't hit. How does a pitching cost stay when we can't pitch?
