It's a common belief in Philadelphia that local fans are the most passionate in the country, especially because of crazed Eagles fans.

Findings from a major national survey paint a somewhat different picture.

Philadelphia does rank high in big-league interest, but it's not even No. 1 in Pennsylvania, according to Scarborough Research.

And Phillies fans stand out much more in their sport than Eagles fans do in football, suggesting that the baseball team may be the difference maker in comparisons with other cities.

Over the next week, we'll roll out some of the surprising findings, but first let's focus on how Philly fans stack up nationally.

About 210,000 people across the country, after being phoned by Scarborough, agreed to fill out detailed questionnaires about all sorts of consumer interests and habits. The results became available in February, though the process lasted from August 2011 to September 2012.

One question asked people if they were "very," "somewhat" or "not at all" interested in one or more of the four biggest sports leagues - the NFL, Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, or the National Basketball Association.

Here are the Top 10 markets - "designated media areas" - ranked by percentage of fans who said they were "very interested":

    1. Green Bay, Wisc., 57 percent.

    2. Milwaukee, Wisc., 56.

    3. Pittsburgh, Pa., 53.

    4. New Orleans, La., 53.

    5. Baltimore, Md., 48.

    6. Boston, Mass., 47.

    7. Colorado Springs/Pueblo, Colo., 46.

    8. Providence, R.I./New Bedford, Mass., 46.

    9. St. Louis, Mo., 46.

    10. Philadelphia, Pa., 45 percent.

    The national average: 38 percent.

Odd list, isn't it? No New York or Chicago, but Colorado Springs? Only two cities with all four sports make the cut, while a town with just one team (Green Bay) leads the way.

Apparently, in small cities where there's less to do, sports can become disproportionately popular, especially if there's a franchise or two nearby that's recently won a championship, explained Bill Nielsen, head of Scarborough's sports marketing division.

    Phillies, by far.
Flyers have the most fans in Philly.
    76ers have the most fans.
    No clue.

That's why he found Philadelphia's ranking "pretty impressive," given that it's the biggest market on the list and second only to Boston among the nation's four-sports cities.

Do the same list by media market size, and Philadelphia finishes far ahead of some other major areas. (Number in parentheses is the rank by four-sport interest.)

    1. New York, 36 percent (No. 43).

    2. Los Angeles, 33 percent (55).

    3. Chicago, 42 percent (16).

    4. Philadelphia, 45 percent (10).

    5. Dallas-Fort Worth, 42 percent (14).

    6. San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose, 36 percent (42).

    7. Boston, 47 percent (6).

    8. Washington, D.C., 39 percent (29).

    9. Atlanta, 37 percent (33).

    10. Houston, 32 percent (58).

Note that only Dallas and Chicago join Philly and Boston in the Top 20, while San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles and Houston can't crack the Top 40 - and yet Albany/Schenectady, Grand Rapids, Toledo, Rochester, Albuquerque and Harrisburg/Lancaster/Lebanon (37 percent) all do.

In Philadelphia, female fans show more team spirit than both genders do in L.A. or Houston. About 34 percent of Philly-area women say they're "very interested" in at least one major sport, just a bit behind Boston's 37 percent, Nielsen said.

Nationally, 27 percent of women expressed being "very interested" in the four leagues.

In absolute numbers overall, though, New York is king, said Nielsen (no relation to the TV ratings folks). In the NFL, for example, the New York Giants have the third lowest market peneration, percentage-wise, but are No. 1 in the league in terms of total fans, with about 7.7 million, he said.

Neilsen acknowledges that there are other, perhaps better, ways to measure fanaticism, like TV ratings, and ticket and merchandise sales.

"This has nothing to do with people who attend games," he said.

Also, the meaning of "very interested" could vary from market to market (as well as fan to fan).

Compared to the zealots who call Philly sports-talk radio, a Philadelphia fan who attends five games a year might think that's no big deal. His counterpart in West Palm Beach, though, might consider that a major commitment.

That could mean that smaller towns tend to overrate their enthusiasm.

Good point Anthony Grant, attendance would be a much better way of evaluating a city's passion for their teams.

SeanMike - nice post calling eagle's fans dumb and then using the word leased instead of least. Guess we can look for you at the ticket window.

this isn't surprising. small towns have nothing to do so what little they have is over the top. same goes for the rest of the world. think about the Olympics, the US fans don't really care because we have so many pro sports leagues. but the rest of the world goes nuts for the Olympics because the only main sports most other countries have are soccer, rugby, & cycling. The US has more sports options just at the college level alone.

No facts to this story. Fact: Eagles sold out every game. Fact: Phillies sold out over 300 straight games. Fact: Flyers sold out since the early 70's, Fact: Union games are either sold out or over 90% every game. Sixers have an identity problem. They have no star plaers and a couple of white boys who can play will increse the attendance. All you have to do is look to the Doc and AI years for large attendances and many sell outs. Big Five basketball plays to large attendances at every game. he only local team the struggles with attendance is Temple football. The alumni does a very poor job with its support and the media does not cover them very well. I have not discussed high school football and basketball in the area that consistantly fills the stands. Please live in another big city to see that we are if not #1 we are in the top three. I lives in Orlando, Chicago and only the Cubs can get away with losing and still draw a croud.

I think the teams in Philly are overrated, the fans are stupid for supporting these losing franchises. The Sixers haven't been relevant in 30 years, ditto with the Eagles. Phillies are the only saving grace, but Ruin Tomorrow Jr is dead set on destroying that as well. No hope for philly fans...none!

This is bogus. Its apples to oranges. Small towns have a much smaller sample size to draw upon. And more focus. That's why Green Bay and Milwaukee come out 1-2. What a garbage methodology.

The bigger cities, like Philly and NYC, have more people, so therefore, there are much more divergent activities. The percentage of fans is majpr when compared with other big cities, but when sports teams are the only things smaller venues have to offer, you get a higher percentage of "fans." We have four pro teams and three carry very well. The fourth, the Sixers, would do well if the team were better. There are six major college basketball teams with Temple and Villanova having good fan bases. The soccer team has its niche fans. Surveys like this are pretty useless without considering all the other activities available to a larger population.

Rosebud, Ruin Tomorrow Jr (not mine), Duh-Lio and Boris Karloff lookalike Holmgren will scare off plenty of Philly Phaithful in 2013! Please, Owners, replace them all!

The questions were asked wrong to accurately gauge the passion of sports fans in Philly. If a team is doing badly, like the Sixers are right now, and you ask us if we are interested in that team, we would answer, "No". That does not mean we are not passionate. Our answer refelcts our passion. I am not interested in that team now beauce they suck, not because I am not passionate. So the entire survey is screwed up.

210,000 people took part in the survey. Ok. How many from each town. Whats the margin of error. See, I had this class in college called statistics. They taught numbers with margins of error. Which apparently, people are beginning to ignore more regularly.

Lots to be desired in Philadelphia sports beside just Pro teams. College football especially really takes a back seat unlike Los Angeles that has 2 major colleges that have real good attendance and pretty good teams with USC and UCLA along with all kinds of pro teams in the area. Be nice if Temple could do this.Philly area with 6,000,000 people is not too good at sending high school players into the pro ranks either especially per capita. I have seen some counties down south that have 200,00 people and have sent almost 4 players a year into the pros in the last few years. Somethings deffinitly missing

That being said, how am I supposed to take seriously a list that names Providence, R.I and Pueblo, Colo., as sports towns.

Fatally flawed logic in the article & the research.

"Odd list, isn't it? No New York or Chicago, but Colorado Springs?" Maybe because people in NY, Philly, Chicago, Detroit, etc. don't have the time or patience to "fill out detailed questionnaires about all sorts of consumer interests and habits".

So, you have a bunch of respondents who either have nothing better to do or are too stupid or polite to tell the interviewer to F off.

I don't cheer for teams from other cities during the many lulls in competence but I don't buck up during the down times either. Sports teams are entertainment products. If the product is not good those involved have no right to expect patronage from the fans. Brand loyalty to a cr*ppy product is foolish.

@Russ: You obviously have never read the Atlanta blogs. You want to see "negativity"? Just visit THOSE blogs after an Atlanta loss and even after some wins. It's the same way. The fans there, last year, got all over Fredi Gonzalez, Uggla, Hansen, and others (even Chipper Jones) when they were going sideways. All that proves is that fans are the same wherever you go. There are negative fans in EVERY city. The level of the negativity corresponds to the hopelessness the fans feel when it comes to their teams. And, you have to admit, it's been pretty hopeless over the years in Philadelphia. How about 6 appearances and two WS wins in over 100 years? How about no Super Bowl wins in the history of what has become known as the "Super Bowl"? How can you blame the fans when the teams in Philly, for the most part, have been putrid and ownership has been clueless?

Fans are similar in most cities. When their team doesn't win, they blame the coach/manager and GM. Never any original thoughts, such as the other team has more talent. Rather, it is we were outcoached. Or our manager doesn't play young players. Same complaints are heard in every city. Phillies fans are enamored with the Braves youngsters. Well, how many playoff games have the Braves won in the past 15 years? On and on. In football, it is always the QB's fault. Doesn't matter the city or level. Same dumb complaint everywhere. And enough with these terrible towels...again....same in every city. Same as the stupid Pa announcers and pregame intros. No olriginality anywhere.ghet

Come one people! This poll is worthless. There is a reason big markets are not in the top list, it is because your population is so much larger. There are a fraction of the people in Green Bay and Milwaukee as there are in Philadelphia. 6 out of 100 is a higher percentage than 50,000 out of 1 Million. This town is getting dumber and dumber. So please stop the questions and arguements about the poll, it's measures are worthless

Only PHL and BOS are 4 for 4 cities in the Top 10. (And why is it called Pueblo, CO and not Denver on this list?) If the list said, "Fans of sports teams you are most scared of?" Philly would have won hands down. I have lived in New Orleans (they didn't quite get why I was so upset over Flyers/Devils in 2001) and DC (walk into a DC sports bar with Eagles gear and see how the seas part) and we will win hands down. Plus, if you look at the population of the top 10 cities, of course not all in the population of Philly are sports fans, but the I do agree that 57% of Green Bay are into the Packers because of limited options and population...

At any rate, being a retired service member I, too, have lived all over the country, North, South, East, and West. I've attended baseball games in numerous other cities. My experience is that the fan base in Philadelphia is light years ahead in fan support, arriving early and staying late, and far superior to fans from other cities in regards to baseball knowledge. Not sure on what YOU are basing your knowledge, but I've witnessed it first hand. We will have to agree to disagree in our assessment of the Philadelphia fan base.

Philly is completely overrated as a sports town. philly has a bunch of football types who think banging your head against something is the answer for everything. philly fans couldn't appreciate good baseball if you paid them. they are the type of fans that start doing the wave at a critical part of the game. only interested in themselves and then curse at the players when their own acting out has driven players to distraction.

Perhaps the only place in the world NOT over-rated as a sports town is Green Bay. The city has one team, but that one team is supported to the max.
As a contrast from Green Bay--admittedly the very tiniest of cities--the rest, as Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, LosAngeles, SanFrancisco/Oakland Bay Area, et cetera, etc., &c. are pikers and hangers-on! The inclusion of ColoradoSprings/Pueblo is absolute insanity!

Well this report does reflect something that I only would've assumed from personal experience, namely that the women here care more about sports than women in other towns. I like that. And to be fair, I've found that the women in PGH are actually similar in terms of high interest and commitment. This is why I would recommend dating a PSU alumna, if you are a sports fanatic. I dated one for two years and had a very good time.

What a mindless survey and waste of human intelligence!! The country's largest cities have vastly different demographics than smaller, more parochial markets, Green Bay being a perfect example. Huge immigrant populations that did not grow up with the prominent US team sports is another factor. Also, large cities tend to have larger portions of citizens who were not born and raised there, hence allegiance to local sports teams tending to be lower.

The biggest misconception is that Philly is a blue collar town....Manufacturing jobs are a very small part of the Philly business picture....and with corporate suites and ticket prices, the majority of attendendees at any of the franchises are residents of the suburbs of Philly or New Jersey....but like the national media holds onto the errroneous Santa Claus story, they also hold onto this blue collar image....(and you know our lazy inept local media don't do enough research to know anything anyway....and if they did, they would have to write a new story instead of their usual regurgation of old news) ...The fact is that dam few blue collars go to flyers games (it is a suit and kid event) Philly games...(it is a young social drinking crowd), Sixers (it is anybody they can give tickets to) Eagles (coporate boxes and suites lower level are big buck tickets and only a small portion of the drunks are left and they are either unemployed or just hangers-on.....

Hit the nail on the head with the observations of fans depending on teams. A good amount of Phillies fans are college students who can get their friends going when the team is on s treak. Flyers fans, $98 bucks for nosebleed seats, you are a die hard fan. Eagles, great tailgaters but way too expensive. Sixers, love the free tickets. Specially when they have free goodies to give out. But, I still pay to see the games regardless of the records of any of the teams. Has to be a Philly team for me. Not bandwagoners like some of the locals who wear out of town uniforms.

@Northcountry: I couldn't care LESS about the "view from outside Philly". Just what makes them experts about our city? You, apparently, haven't watched many Packers' games, huh? Ever watch their clueless "cheese head" fanatics or listen to their spittle laden drivel regarding their team, even when they sucked? ALL football fans are "loud". Philadelphia fans ARE knowledgeable and demand that their players don't "dog it" and put in a full day's work for a full day's pay. You, on the other hand, sound like someone that will accept mediocrity and, if you are or were a business owner, probably wouldn't expect the best from your employees. I suggest you speak for yourself.

Easy friend; I am a retired business owner and have lived all over the country, and had exceptionally high expectations, and matched them with exceptionally high compensation for delivered results. I am from this city and having lived elsewhere, the fans here are loud & passionate, but that doesn't equate to knowledgeable.

What Philly is known for is annually overrating their teams & drinking the kool-aid-- that's the view from outside of Philly, also known for a low-end fan base loud; but really not all that knowledgeable, see point one as evidence.

What's "overrated" in this town are the writers, who have (over the years) become pitiful obvious lackeys for the front offices of all of our teams. And, if this city employs editors for the individual newspapers (especially this particular web site) then every one of them should be fired for gross negligence and dereliction of duty. The writers in Philadelphia have GOT to be the worst that sports has to offer. Philadelphia's fan base is rabid and supportive of teams with competent management and players who work hard and don't work the system. It's been that way for years. This fan base deserves better, from owners, managers, and players to the "writers" that cover our teams.

You have to remember these people agreed to take this survey. If you don't like to take surveys, or have other things to do better with you time, you are going to pass on it. That's why any survey is always going to be biased because of one's willingness to participate. Very few, if any, really hold any weight. Just another puff piece.

And don't forget it's all small markets ahead of Philly. Why? Because, not including Boston, there is nothing else to do in those God-forsaken towns EXCEPT sports! So of course the interest will be higher.

The teams have done an outstanding job pulling in the fans with their promotions, fields and arenas of play. Having the local sports media at your total beck and call at a moments notice helps a lot, too. Control the media and you control everything, as some dictator once said. The problem is in championships, and this is where they ALL come up woefully short, even the Phils.

But as far as selling the "Idea" of a championship caliber organization or team, these Philly teams are the best at it, with a special thanks to the local media and papers. And a lot of the fans are gullible enough into buying into that premise. Each and every year.

Actually the teams are right where they need to be in terms of being businesses. With the so called "best fans" they keep attending games and buying gear so why should the teams field a better more expensive product?

Of course, the Phillies and Flyers(the Sixers are always close as well) are over the salary cap every single year so there goes that theory. As for the Eagles it is hard to say since it is a proven fact that the best teams in the NFL over the last 15 years are all at the bottom of the league in terms of payroll so again your theory lacks traction. Maybe actually having a clue could be a new prerequisite before you post?

The entire sports fan "community" EVERYWHERE is loaded with clowns trying to jump onto bandwagons. Unless we see more about the methodology of this "research" the results are very highly questionable. The joke of this is, perhaps, most clearly revealed by the ranking of New Orleans at number four. Yeah, RIGHT! This is a city without, NHL hockey, without MLB baseball, and with an NBA basketball team (not to mention the first pick in the draft) GIVEN to the city by fiat of the worst sports commissioner this side of Bud Selig! Also, did you ever notice all the fans at the Super Dome disguised as empty seats until the recent decent run by the Ain'tsaints!

In terms of national media, Philly is absent. There is no "ESPN Philadelphia" but there is Dallas, LA, NY, Boston, Chicago. There hasn't been a Philly sportswriter on a national TV show since Bill Conlin years ago. The Sports Reporters, Around the Horn, PTI, etc. have been absent of Philly writers. Probably because they don't know anything about the national sports scene.

Notice how teams in markets with "questionable fan loyalty" generally seem to do better in terms of championships? Why is that?

Its b/c if these teams dont field at least the occasional "championship caliber" teams, the fan base disappears.

In Philly, the fans are always there so as a biz., why bother rocking the boat...go with what works.

Think about this, could you imagine if all the sudden Jeff Laurie faced an Eagles/Cowboys home game with only 50% attendance at the Link??? Dramatic changes would be made.

once the eagles moved into the linc and began making people buy PSLs, they knew they had this fan base on a leash. they and the flyers fan base are two fans bases of the city that will continue to go to games despite the performance of the team. the phillies are starting to slip some now that they arent doing as well in years' past. for example, the on deck series this year had a rather poor showing whereas it was sold out in 2011, 2010, etc. as for the sixers, ugh.
