Phillies Notes: Phils invite 9 players to spring training

The Phillies formally invited nine players, many of whom will form triple-A Lehigh Valley's roster, to spring training on Thursday. The most notable was catcher Humberto Quintero, who is the favorite to serve as the team's backup catcher during the first month of the season while Carlos Ruiz serves his 25-game suspension for using Adderall.

In addition to Quintero, those invited were infielders Andres Blanco, Josh Fields, Michael Martinez, and Pete Orr; catcher Steven Lerud; outfielder Jermaine Mitchell; and pitchers Cesar Jimenez and Zach Miner.

Martinez, Orr, and Lerud appeared for the Phillies in 2012. Blanco spent the entire season at triple-A Lehigh Valley. The others are newcomers.

Quintero, 33, was with the Royals, Marlins, and Brewers organizations in 2012. He played 43 games for Kansas City and hit .232. In 10 seasons, he has a career .590 OPS but is known as a strong defensive presence.

Miner, 30, is this year's reclamation project. The righty has not pitched in the majors since 2009 but had a career 4.24 ERA in four seasons with Detroit. He posted a 2.50 ERA as a reliever in 23 games last season for triple-A Toledo.
