Donato banned for drug violation

SS. NEUMANN-GORETTI High product Mark Donato, a first baseman with the Kansas City Royals' rookie classification club in Surprise, Ariz., has been suspended for 50 games for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

SS. NEUMANN-GORETTI High product Mark Donato, a first baseman with the Kansas City Royals' rookie classification club in Surprise, Ariz., has been suspended for 50 games for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Donato, 20, tested positive for an amphetamine.

In 38 games, the 26th-round draft choice out of Indian River (JC), in Florida, hit .253 with three homers, 13 doubles and 27 RBI. Donato was the Daily News' co-player of the year in 2009 and pitcher of the year in '10.
