The twice-a-year interleague matchups like Mets-Yankees and Cubs-White Sox could become one series a year in 2013, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reported on Monday.

That's a shame, because those are practically the only interleague series that make sense anymore. But the Houston Astros' move to the AL in 2013 will give each league 15 teams and make season-long interleague play necessary.

And that has created a scheduling nightmare.

Rubin cautioned that the schedule is still in the "discussion" stage.

But as Kevin Kaduk of Yahoo Sports pointed out, those "discussions" probably mean White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf and Mets owner Fred Wilpon calling their old buddy Bud Selig and complaining about three automatic sellouts per season disappearing off the schedule.

History lesson

Sun and fun in Miami

The Miami Marlins are on the road for the next nine games, which will give their grounds crew time to revive the fading turf at the team's new ballpark.

The grass has been turning brown because the retractable roof was closed more than anticipated in what turned out to be an unusually wet April.

Young suspended

Major League Baseball suspended Detroit's Delmon Young for seven days following his arrest on a hate crime harassment charge last week in New York. Young was arrested on Friday after a late-night tussle at his hotel during which police say he yelled anti-Semitic epithets.

Around the bigs

Mets starter Mike Pelfrey, 28, will have season-ending Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday.

The Dodgers reinstated righthanded reliever Todd Coffey from the disabled list (right knee inflammation).

Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher is expected to miss a week (strained left hamstring).

Third baseman Brandon Inge agreed to terms with the Oakland Athletics.

Johnny Damon, 38, will join the Indians on Tuesday in Chicago.

Hideki Matsui, 37, signed a minor-league contract with Tampa Bay.
