Poor Fausto Carmona. First he lost his identity when it was discovered his real name is Roberto Hernandez, and now he's lost a lot of money.

Recently cleared of false identity charges in the Dominican Republic, Hernandez still has not reported to spring training while he sorts out various legal problems.

The Indians, not knowing when he might be able to report, renegotiated he contract. Downward.

Thought to be 28, Hernandez was revealed to be 31. He now will make $2.5 million as a base salary in 2012 and can earn an additional $2.7 million in performance and roster bonuses. He had been scheduled to make $7 million.

Miguel Cabrera said he will be in the Detroit lineup on opening day. The third baseman rejoined his teammates in Lakeland, Fla., a week after a grounder off the bat of the Phillies Hunter Pence took a bad-hop and broke a bone below his right eye.

Cabrera hit a major-league-leading .344 last season with 30 home runs and 105 RBIs for the AL Central champions.

Carter remembered

The Mets will honor the memory of former star Gary Carter with a ceremony on opening day. Carter's family will take part in the tribute on April 5 at Citi Field.

Carter died Feb. 16 in Florida at the age of 57. The Hall of Famer catcher helped lead the Mets to the 1986 World Series championship.

Cardinals playoff hero Chris Carpenter returned to camp after four days of tests last week in St. Louis to determine the cause of a nerve ailment that has weakened his throwing shoulder.

Carpenter has not faced hitters since throwing batting practice on March 3.

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts will begin the season on the 15-day disabled list as he strives to return from a concussion.

The Orioles reassigned pitcher Dontrelle Willis to their minor-league camp.

Righthander Chris Young, still recovering from shoulder surgery last May, agreed to a minor-league contract with the Mets.

Blue Jays' righthander Dustin McGowan agreed to a $4.1 million, three-year extension that adds $3.5 million to the deal he reached in December.
