Mike Trout played 40 games in the majors last summer, then spent the winter at home in Millville, N.J., working in a batting cage.

After the Angels' first full-squad workout on Monday, manager Mike Sciosca said he wouldn't rule out Trout's making the team out of spring training.

"You always got to think you can win a job," Trout told Yahoo Sports, "but it's still up in the air right now. If they put me in [triple-A] Salt Lake, wherever they want me . . . I'm still young. It'll make me believe I have to work harder."

Beyond the call of duty

Trevor Gooby, the Pittsburgh Pirates' director of Florida operations, delivered a baby when a fan went into labor Tuesday night at McKechnie Field in Bradenton.

"We were waiting for the ambulance and she kept saying, 'This baby's coming,' " Gooby said. "She gave one push, the baby came out, and I caught it."

The baby, a boy who was born five weeks early, will be named (you guessed it) McKechnie.

Impressive repertoire

Yu Darvish threw 35 pitches in a 10-minute session, and Texas catcher Mike Napoli said the righthander used his entire seven-pitch repertoire: a two-seam fastball, a four-seam fastball, a split-finger fastball, a curve, a slider, a cutter, and a change-up.

What's in a name?

His dad calls him Mike. Friends call him Mikey. His mom calls him Cruz. Teammates call him Bigfoot. Most fans know the Miami slugger as Mike Stanton, but his first name is actually Giancarlo, the name he now says he prefers.

Noteworthy

Former Phillies outfielder Lenny Dykstra is seeking to withdraw his no-contest plea to charges of auto theft and providing a false financial statement, a Los Angeles district attorney spokeswoman said. Dykstra is scheduled to be sentenced Monday, facing up to four years in prison.

Pirates pitcher A.J. Burnett was struck in the face by a batted ball and flew to Pittsburgh to have his right eye examined.

Major League Baseball will investigate Texas' signing of Dominican prospect Jairo Beras for $4.5 million. The Rangers believe he is 17 and eligible to sign, while some other teams insist he's 16 and ineligible until July 2.

Mariners manager Eric Wedge says there is "considerable concern" about a pectoral injury suffered by centerfielder Franklin Gutierrez.
