Role: Provides insurance in leftfield behind John Mayberry Jr. and provided power as a lefthanded hitter off the bench. Can play all three outfield positions.

Acquired: Signed a 2-year, $2.5 million deal as a free agent on Dec. 8. Will make $1.15 million this season.

Of Nix' 64 career home runs, 62 have been off righthanded pitchers.

FAST FACTS

Had dreams of being an Air Force fighter pilot if baseball hadn't worked out. Nix has uncles and grandparents who flew in the military.

Will wear No. 7.

Has a career .111 average (4-for-36) at Citizens Bank Park. His four hits are three singles and a double.

Played piano as a youngster and wrote a paper on Mozart while a sophomore in high school.

Was the starting quarterback for Midland High in football-crazy Texas.

Had a career-high 16 home runs last year and played in a personal-best 124 games.

Singlehandedly beat the Phillies on June 1 last year with a solo homer and spectacular catch of a Domonic Brown sinking liner with the bases loaded in a 2-1 Nationals win.

His brother, Jayson, is a utility infielder who signed with the Yankees in November.

The Phillies are Nix' fifth organization in 10 years.
