Manuel's fond memories in Fla. overshadowed by '97

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Few will be saddened when the Florida Marlins no longer play baseball in Sun Life Stadium.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Few will be saddened when the Florida Marlins no longer play baseball in Sun Life Stadium.

Charlie Manuel has some bright memories as his Phillies play their final games here, but one terrible night is stuck in his memory.

That's Oct. 26, 1997, the night Edgar Renteria ruined the Cleveland Indians' title hopes in the 11th inning of Game 7 of the World Series. Manuel was the Indians' hitting coach.

"I was standing right over there," Manuel said, pointing to the end of the dugout closest to home plate. "I always stood up on the steps looking at the hitters."

Next season, the Marlins move into a new stadium in downtown Miami. No more sharing the field with the Dolphins. And no more worries about rain.

"A roof will help," Manuel said.
