Touch 'Em All: Pity the Mets?

What kind of season has it been for the New York Mets? Their top three hitters - Jose Reyes (.336), David Murphy (.320), and Ike Davis (.302) - all are on the disabled list.

What kind of season has it been for the New York Mets?

Their top three hitters - Jose Reyes (.336), David Murphy (.320), and Ike Davis (.302) - all are on the disabled list.

Not to be outdone, the top two pitchers, in terms of ERA - Chris Young (1.88) and Taylor Buchholz (3.12) - also are on the DL. And Johan Santana, languishing on the DL since March 22, hasn't pitched all season.

Leaves you all choked up, doesn't it?

1,200 home runs

After a month and a half on the DL, Alex Rodriguez returned to the Yankees lineup to face the Minnesota Twins.

So when Jim Thome lumbered to the plate it was the first time two players with 600 career homers had met in a game since Hank Aaron's Braves played Willie Mays' Mets on July 17, 1973.

Johnny B. Goode

Tampa Bay's Johnny Damon thought he had slugged a grand slam into the right-center-field seats in the seventh inning on Sunday, but a 2-minute, 45-second review determined that Damon's drive off Jeff Gray hit the top of the fence and came back into play for a three-run double.

So when Damon led off the ninth in an 8-8 tie, he ripped a "no-doubt" shot to the same spot for a 9-8 win over Seattle.

Stuck on 199

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield continues his pursuit of elusive career victory No. 200. He had a 4-1 lead on Saturday night, but the Kansas City Royals launched an eight-run sixth and handed the Red Sox righthander his fifth straight outing without a win.

No, I meant the other jerk

When Yankees manager Joe Girardi yanked A.J. Burnett on Saturday, the struggling righthander could be seen mouthing two curse words, apparently at the manager.

But both said after the game that Burnett was directing his anger toward the umpire's strike zone.

Oh.

A big deal for Weaver

The Angels have signed ace Jered Weaver to a contract extension believed to be for five years and $85 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Weaver, a two-time all-star who is having his best season, is 14-6 and leads the American League with a 2.10 ERA.

Moves

Pittsburgh signed 23-year-old Jose Tabata to a six-year, $14.75 million contract extension through 2016 on Sunday with three club options that could keep him with the Pirates through 2019. . . . The San Diego Padres retired the No. 51 worn by Trevor Hoffman, baseball's career saves leader with 601, 552 of them with the Padres. . . . the San Francisco Giants placed closer Brian Wilson on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with inflammation in his right elbow and recalled righthander Steve Edlefsen from triple-A Fresno. The closer has not pitched since a blown save at Atlanta on Monday. . . . the Houston Astros optioned righthander Jordan Lyles to triple-A Oklahoma City in anticipation of outfielder Jordan Schafer coming off the disabled list on Monday.
