Umpire Bell a no show for Phillies-Mets series closer

NEW YORK - Shortly before the start of Sunday's Phillies-Mets game, an announcement was made that there would be only three umpires because Wally Bell was not present. No reason was given for Bell's absence.

Bell was supposed to be the second-base umpire. Instead, Laz Diaz moved from second to first.

Bell, 46, has been a big-league umpire since 1993. He worked the 2006 World Series. Bell returned to umpiring after having open heart surgery in 1999. - Ray Parrillo
