SAN FRANCISCO - Heath Bell stopped a Giants rally in the ninth inning Saturday as San Diego beat San Francisco 4-2, leaving two NL playoff spots in doubt heading into the final day of the regular season.

Pablo Sandoval hit an RBI single with one out in the ninth, but Bell got pinch-hitter Jose Guillen to ground into a game-ending double play with runners at the corners.

Tim Stauffer gave San Diego another clutch start, and the Padres pulled within one game of the Giants in the NL West.

The Padres began the day one game behind Atlanta for the wild card, but their win, coupled with the Braves' loss to the Phillies, gave both teams 90-71 records.

Stauffer (6-5) allowed three hits in 61/3 innings. He improved to 3-1 against the Giants this season, again delivering in a starting role after spending most of the season in the bullpen.

Giants starter Barry Zito (9-14) gave up consecutive bases-loaded walks in the first and was booed off the field when done after a season-low three innings.

The Padres came into this weekend series needing a three-game sweep to have any chance of making the playoffs. San Diego has won two in a row in a hostile environment where Saturday's sellout crowd of 42,653 waved orange rally towels.

San Diego is 7-1 this year at AT&T Park.

Reds 7, Brewers 4

CINCINNATI - Jay Bruce hit two more homers as Cincinnati reached 90 wins for the first time since 1999 by beating Milwaukee while resting players to get ready for the playoffs.

Bruce clinched the NL Central title on Tuesday with a ninth-inning solo homer. He extended his final-week tear with a two-run shot off lefthander Chris Capuano and a solo homer that was reviewed for possible fan interference.

Corky Miller hit a two-run homer off Todd Coffey (2-4) in the seventh, when the Reds broke open a tied game.

Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker replaced six starters after five innings and gave Joey Votto and Scott Rolen a day off to rest for the Reds' first playoff appearance in 15 years.

The Reds are having their best season since 1999, when they won 96 games but failed to make the postseason. Cincinnati lost a one-game playoff for the NL wild card to the Mets.

Cincinnati will open the playoffs on the road next week, against either the Phillies or the NL West champion.

Baker expects to announce his three-man rotation and most of the playoff roster on Sunday.
