Playoff watch for remaining NL teams

With 3 days remaining in the regular season, the Phillies know they will open their fourth straight postseason Wednesday at The Bank.

With 3 days remaining in the regular season, the Phillies know they will open their fourth straight postseason Wednesday at The Bank.

But they still don't know which team will show up in the other dugout.

* It will be the Reds if:

The Atlanta Braves win the National League wild card and Cincinnati, which has already clinched the NL Central, finishes tied or with a worse record than the NL West winner (San Francisco or San Diego).

Notes: The Giants and Padres both hold the head-to-head tiebreaker against the Reds. But the Phillies could influence the wild-card race because they play the Braves this weekend at Turner Field.

* It will be the Padres if:

San Diego surpasses Atlanta and wins the wild card; or . . .

San Diego wins the division with a worse record than Cincinnati and Atlanta wins the wild card.

* It will be the Giants if:

San Francisco ends up as the wild card; or . . .

San Francisco wins the division with a worse record than Cincinnati and Atlanta wins the wild card.

Notes: The Padres and Giants both control their own destinies since they play each other at AT&T Park this weekend with San Francisco's magic number to clinch at 1.

The Reds, who have already clinched a playoff spot, will host the Milwaukee Brewers the final weekend.
