WASHINGTON - Rookie righthander Stephen Strasburg went on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with inflammation in his throwing shoulder, the latest indication of how careful the Washington Nationals are being with their prized pitcher.

Strasburg, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft and signed a record $15.1 million contract, had been expected to pitch against the Phillies on Sunday at Nationals Park.

"If he's 90 percent healthy, we shut him down," Washington manager Jim Riggleman said. "He's got to be 100 percent."

The move to the DL is retroactive to July 22, a day after Strasburg made his last appearance. He was scratched minutes before he was to make his 10th major-league start Tuesday because his right shoulder felt stiff while he was warming up in the bullpen.

An MRI exam Tuesday showed Strasburg's shoulder is "totally clean," general manager Mike Rizzo said.

Strasburg is 5-2 with a 2.32 ERA, 75 strikeouts and 15 walks in 541/3 innings since making his major-league debut on June 8.

The Nationals have said they would end Strasburg's season when he reaches 160 innings between the majors and minors. So far in 2010, his count is at 1092/3 innings, including the minors, matching his workload in his final college season at San Diego State: 109 innings.
