Braves' Kawakami finally wins

ATLANTA - Chipper Jones' three-run homer in the seventh gave the Atlanta Braves' Kenshin Kawakami his long-awaited first win of the season, 4-3 over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

But the Braves had to work their way out of a ninth-inning jam to close the deal.

Peter Moylan struck out pinch-hitter Johnny Damon with the bases loaded to end it as Kawakami avoided the first 0-10 start in Braves history.

The righthander trailed, 1-0, when he left for a pinch-hitter in the seventh.

  • Jones' homer off Joel Zumaya (2-1) later in the inning landed about 10 rows deep in the center-field seats and drove in Gregor Blanco and Melky Cabrera, who walked. The Braves then pushed it to 4-1 in the eighth when Eric Hinske's double off Enrique Gonzalez drove in Troy Glaus.

Kawakami (1-9), perhaps pitching to protect his spot in the rotation, gave up only two hits and one run in seven innings, his longest start this season. He walked three and struck out six.

NEW YORK - Jason Kubel and Minnesota roughed up former teammate Johan Santana early, and Carl Pavano produced another fine pitching performance in a victory over New York.

Pavano (9-6) gave up three hits in his second consecutive complete game, both of which have come against an NL East ace. The well-traveled righthander tossed a four-hitter last Sunday to beat Roy Halladay and the Phillies, 4-1.

Pavano also had two hits and a sacrifice at the plate for Minnesota, which ended a four-game skid. It was his sixth career shutout and first since June 5, 2009, against the Chicago White Sox.
