Pitching decisions didn't work out

NEW YORK – With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Charlie Manuel had a tough decision to make.

Stick with struggling starter Pedro Martinez, even though the white-hot Hideki Matsui was strolling to the plate?

Or bring in lefthander J.A. Happ, who was warming up in the bullpen?

It was early but Martinez was laboring with his command. Plus, Matsui had driven a 3-2 pitch from Martinez deep into the right-field bleachers to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

Matsui also hit a home run off Martinez in Game 2 of the World Series.

Manuel stuck with Martinez.

Matsui ripped an 0-2 pitch into center field for a two-run single to give the home team a 4-1 lead.

And the Yankees were on their way to a 7-3 victory and their 27th World Series title.

"I had to let him face that guy," Manuel said. "Pedro knows how to pitch. He's an experienced guy. Plus, we could go down 4-1 and still come back."

That was just one of dozens of decisions Manuel and his Yankees counterpart, Joe Girardi, made on a cold night in the Bronx.

Girardi's decisions worked out better, mainly because Matsui tied a World Series record with six RBIs, Yankees starter Andy Petitte worked 52/3 solid innings, and Mariano Rivera finished the game by pitching 12/3 scoreless innings.

Manuel seemed disappointed with the outcome but also proud of his team for reaching the World Series for the second year in a row.

"I told them I love the way they play the game," Manuel said of his comments to his team after the game. "They never quit. We've got to keep what we've got as far as attitude, chemistry, our philosophy as far as how we play the game.

"These guys have a lot of resistance or endurance. They love to play baseball.

"That's what got us here and that's what's going to keep us here."

Manuel's third-inning decision might have been irrelevant. He brought Happ in the game in a similar situation in the fifth inning, and the result was the same.

This time, the rookie replaced Chad Durbin to face Matsui. And the Yankees' designated hitter ripped a two-run double for his fifth and sixth RBIs.

Manuel ended up using six pitchers. Martinez surrendered four runs in four innings, and Durbin allowed three more in the fifth inning, two of which scored on Matsui's double off Happ.

Chan Ho Park, Scott Eyre, and Ryan Madson combined to shut out the Yankees over the final three innings. But the Phillies weren't able to overcome that 7-1 deficit.

"I have to give credit to the Yankees pitchers," Manuel said. "It seems like our offense, we couldn't get the big hit and take command when we needed to."

With his team behind by six runs, Manuel had to hope the Phillies' bats would come alive, close the gap, and create some suspense in the late innings.

It never happened in Game 6. But Manuel believes the Phillies will get another chance.

"We'll be back, like MacArthur said," Manuel said. "I hope we play the Yankees."

Charlie should've went to Happ in the third. Charlie didn't show the sense of urgency that he should have. What was he waiting for? If they get out that inning still down one run it's a different game. Pedro had nothing on his fastball and it was like BP for the Yankees..even they're outs were hit hard.

Maybe in 2010 they can give Happ a regular spot in the rotation and leave him there. Maybe in 2010 Cole Hamels will be Cole Hamels again.

I still question his decision to bat Feliz 7th. HE was 0-4 with RISP last night, and all 4 AB ended the inning. Chooch would've knocked some home.

It wasn't about the coaching...it was about who was a better team on 11/4...Phils have what it takes for another run, while Yankees are old in many key positions...Phils vs RSN in '10!

Sorry Phil, you can second guess the pitching moves but it doesn't matter because the Phils didn't hit. The series turned on a few moments...our inability to hold a 3-0 lead in game 3, and Damon's at bat in Game 4. After Matsui homered in game 3 and again in game 6, we come to the 4th inning and unfortunately Pedro hits texiera to load the bases. Texiera was doing nothing but we had no place to put Matsui. My point is even if you bring in someone else there, the Phils aren't going to win game six with 3 runs. The yanks hit .247 as a team, 20 points better than us, they scored 5 more runs (32-27) over 6 games and the Yanks ERA was 4.58 while the Phils was 5.37. It was a great year by the Phils, we just came up short and were beaten by a better team in this series. We had to win 2 of 3 at home. With Hamels being off and Lidge leaking a lot of oil, we still got to the big dance. The core is solid. Give these guys some credit for battling as hard as they did and stop the second guessing. We haven't had a team go to back-to-back World Series in forever so we should appreciate their accomplishment instead of picking it apart. Changing pitchers wouldn't have changed the outcome. The yanks were better this time but the Phils will be back and I hope we get the yanks again. Next time we'll turn the tables on them. Thanks to all the Phillies and the organization for a great year!

To all the New York fans who feel the need to comment on Philly message boards, You are utter losers. To have such low self esteem that you feel it necessary to crawl yourselves onto somebody else's commentary, it must feel lousy. To have to define yourself based on your team's success like a preening sycophant trying to grasp the hero's coattails - well, congratulations to you. You really are superior.

To the New York low life.... your team won because more than half of the players on the Yankees use steroids. Maybe if Pedro was taking steroids he may have pitched better like the Steroid user Andy Petite.

I agree with salurb. We were pretty lucky to get to the WS with inconsitant pitching all year. If Lidge and Hammels are right, this would have been a closer matchup. And the bats going cold didn't help much.

phillysucksagain.... if there were a salary cap, the Yankees would be like the Redskins... finishing in dead last year in and year out due to wasteful spending. But hey, it only took you 9 years to find the best players that money could buy and win something.
