NEW YORK - The Phillies have not yet decided whether to offer a contract extension to pitcher Cliff Lee this off-season, but they have discussed the possibility internally.

"Clearly, it's on our minds, but we haven't made a decision if we will yet," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "Naturally you have to think about it, but we're more focused on him pitching in this series."

The club holds a $9 million option on Lee for 2010, after which the 31-year-old lefthander will become a free agent - unless he and the Phillies agree on an extension.

Since the Phils acquired Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco from Cleveland in July for a package of minor-league players, the pitcher has become the team's ace. During the regular season, he was 7-4, with a 3.39 earned run average with the Phils. In the postseason, he is 4-0, with a 1.56 ERA.

Variables for the team to consider: Lee's age, the Phils' already-high payroll, and the potential that Lee could seek a contract comparable to the seven year, $161 million deal the New York Yankees lavished on CC Sabathia last winter.

Victorino plays

Shane Victorino suffered a bruised finger on his right hand when he was hit by a pitch in Game 5, but he was in the lineup for Game 6 of the World Series tonight.

"Shane's fine," manager Charlie Manuel said. "I'll carry Shane out to center field, make sure he knows the directions. . . . His finger is fine. He's in the lineup. He's going to play. The swelling has gone down. He said he can hold a bat. He said he can grip the ball. That's what I took. That's what it is. If there's any problem, I'll take him out of the game."

Lee is about the only reason we are where we are. Let's get him locked up.

If Lee doesn't take 15 a year at his age to stay with this team, it ain't gonna happen. At least we have him locked up for next year

Salary caps need to be put in place to level the playing field otherwise it makes developing players in the farm system a moot point, wait for the best players to become available and then just buy them

I'm just glad we're not one of the low payroll teams which makes this even a possibility

Phils will give Adam Eaton 3 yrs 25, but probably wont want to offer a long term deal to Lee, but they have him locked up for next year so really no need to push it to much now. Probably a good idea to see how Happ pitches next year and if Hamels can bounce back or not.

Hamels has to get it together and they have a couple real good pitchers in the minors. But right now, he's all they got. I'd like to see him here for 3-4 years with hamels and Drabek et al. For some reason, Lee doesn't come across as someone who is fired up to stay though.

17 million a year 3 year extension. As great as he has been you dont want to be tied up that long term. If he is still rolling after taking in 51 million you can always extend another 3. And lets not kid ourselves with the success this team has had they are rolling in it, and Eaton/Jenkins/Thome comes off the books this year which saves 20 million

Feliz is the only player you need to replace. Great fielder, not a reliable bat. Keep Werth. Figure out the left handed pinch hitting situation - Dobbs and Stairs aren't doing it. Pitching, get aggressive, maybe Cole for Halladay. Get Chase, Raul, Eyre, Brett and Romero healthy. See you here next year, on the other end of the bat. Thanks for the great year guys.

BlairW - you're right on point. Trade Hamels for Halladay. Are the Phillies seriously not jumping on this Lee extension??? WTF?? Just watched the last out of the Series. It was a GREAT year. Thanks, Phils for another exciting year of baseball. I'm proud to call myself a fan. The Yanks were not the better team but congrats to them.
