Veteran Home Run Payoff winner cashes in again

Nick Capozio is no stranger to the Daily News Home Run Payoff.

From Phillies tickets to Timex watches, Capozio, 87, has received a prize of some sort from the Daily News since 1978.

Capozio once again struck gold as the latest $1,000 winner in the Daily News Home Run Playoff Payoff contest thanks to Jayson Werth's sixth-inning home run in the Phillies' Game 3 loss on Saturday.

"I love Jayson Werth," Capozio said. "I was just saying to a friend of mine that next to Carlos Ruiz, he's probably one of the most underrated players on the Phillies."

In addition to racking up the goods in the Payoff, this veteran contestant also can boast winning tickets for a special advance IMAX screening at the Franklin Institute in 2007, Sixers tickets in 1989 and even a Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band T-shirt in 1978.

"I almost won $10,000 once back in the 1980s," Capozio said. "The bases were loaded and Garry Maddox was at the plate when my name was called. Unfortunately, he popped up, but I came really close."

Nevertheless, Capozio plans to do big things with his latest winnings.

"I have a brother 5 years younger who could use some help, so I think I'll split the cash with him,'' he said. "The rest I'll splurge on lunch at the Four Seasons - it's my favorite watering hole and hey, I deserve it."

Four others collected prizes in the Daily News Home Run Playoff Payoff contest on Saturday. They were:

Jacqueline Ruczynski, Philadelphia

Jack Johnson, Philadelphia

Bobby Stevens, Brookhaven

J.J. Winkle, Philadelphia

There were three winners during the third inning of last night's Game 4. They were:

William Laurencin, Sicklerville, N.J.

Joe Musetti, Morton

Diane Stafford, Philadelphia

The Daily News pays $1,000 for a home run hit in the Playoff Payoff inning and $10,000 for a grand slam. Contestants whose batters fail to hit a home run receive a gift pack, which includes a variety of Phillies-related items.

This season, the Daily News has paid out $26,000 on 22 Payoff homers. You can hear the Home Run Playoff Payoff inning during each Phillies broadcast on WPHT (1210-AM). Today's coupon is on Page W-26. *
