ALL SUMMER LONG, we laughed, we cried, we tore our hair out and glued it back on - and now, fellow Phillies fans, it's time to send me your 2009 memories, photos, songs/poems, game-day rituals, basement shrines, whatever, so our Fightins' go into battle knowing how much we love 'em.
"Here's a picture of the Phanatic choking me right after I told him he should take a bath," wrote Philip B. McAlpin Sr. of Woodlyn, Delaware County. He spray-painted a 15-foot Phillies "P" on his front lawn last fall, then watched the playoffs at "my favorite watering hole, Johnny Bear's Lounge, 15th and Shunk, where I shoot darts in the South Philly Dart League."
McAlpin wrote that he's been a Phils fan since "the days of Don Money and Michael Jack Schmidt," has collected all the Phils 8x10 photos given out at Arco gas stations and remembers "buying iron-on letters and putting 'SCHMIDT' on the back of my plain white tee shirt."
A couple of seasons ago, McAlpin said, "All you heard was 'Mets this, Mets that' - I got sick of it. When Jimmy Rollins said we were gonna do it, I just knew we were."
McAlpin and the Johnny Bear's Lounge fans knew last year, and know this year, he said.
"[Brad] Lidge, who had a horrible, horrible season, will be FINE!" he promised. "The pitching will jell, the hitting will jell, and I say, 'GO PHILS! REPEAT! BACK TO BACK!' "
Please send your Phils photos and anecdotes to Phillies@phillynews.com today!
