When Derek Jeter passed Lou Gehrig in career hits as a Yankee on Friday night, he became the sixth career hits leader for the team since the old Highlanders completed their first season in 1903. The others were Willie Keeler (1903-11), Hal Chase (1911-22), Wally Pipp (1922-29), Babe Ruth (1929-37), and Gehrig (1937-2009), according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Yesterday was the first time the Yankees have lost consecutive games since Aug. 16-17 at Seattle and Oakland. They dropped back-to-back games at home for the first time since June 17-18 against Washington.

Athletics. Rajai Davis stole second in the first inning to become the first Oakland player to steal a base in four consecutive games since Stan Javier in 1995. He has a career-high 36 stolen bases this season.

Reds. Cincinnati's Arthur Rhodes, a former Phillie, appeared in his 777th career game, tying Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry for 46th on baseball's career list.

Astros. Lefthander Mike Hampton has scheduled left-rotator cuff surgery for Tuesday in New York City.

Cardinals. Righthander John Smoltz is being held out of his scheduled start tomorrow against Florida because of shoulder tendinitis.

World Cup. Terry Tiffee hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and the United States beat China, 8-0, in the World Cup in Regensburg, Germany.
