Mets lose Perez for season
The New York Mets have lost their third pitcher for the season in two days.
Lefthander Oliver Perez will require season-ending surgery to repair right-knee tendinosis, the team said after he was examined yesterday in New York.
The injury ends a dismal season for Perez, who is expected to be ready for spring training. He is the 13th Mets player on the disabled list, with the pitching staff especially hard-hit this week.
On Tuesday, the Mets said ace Johan Santana and reliever J.J. Putz are out for the season. Santana needs surgery for bone chips in his elbow. Putz had a setback in his recovery from elbow surgery and has been shut down.
The Mets recalled righthander Lance Broadway from triple-A Buffalo to take the place of Perez, who was put on their 15-day disabled list.
Perez, who signed a three-year, $36 million contract in February, was 3-4 this season with a 6.82 ERA in 14 starts. The 28-year-old was out from May 7 to July 8 with the same problem.
Fines possible for Rockies, umps
Major League Baseball is investigating umpires and Colorado players for their actions during and after the Rockies' 14-inning win Monday night over the visiting San Francisco Giants.
A handful of Rockies players exchanged words with the umpiring crew during and after the game.
Second base umpire Bill Miller called Yorvit Torrealba a derogatory name while the catcher was on base, the Denver Post reported. That escalated tensions on a night when both teams complained about the ball-and-strike calls of umpire Angel Campos.
After the game, which the Rockies won on Ryan Spilborghs' grand slam, Torrealba exchanged words with Miller as the crew that included Derryl Cousins and Jim Joyce tried to leave the field through a fence behind home plate, the paper reported.
The umpires filed an incident report.
"This is a serious matter, and we will take a serious look at it," MLB disciplinarian Bob Watson said. "We're looking at both players and umpires."
Later, Watson told the Associated Press that no one would be suspended over the brouhaha, but that fines are likely to be handed down once his investigation is complete.
