No matter how pleasant your weekend was, it probably wasn't quite as good as that of Jimmy Rollins . . . or Richard Davidson.
Rollins, who hit his second career grand slam to put the Phillies ahead in Saturday's 14-6 thrashing of the Cardinals, put a cherry on top - and $1,000 in Davidson's pocket - with a two-run home run in the sixth inning of their 9-2 win yesterday, winning $1,000 for Davidson, of West Chester, in the Daily News Home Run Payoff Contest.
"I heard," said the 57-year-old who is retired from the Navy, when reached at his home yesterday. "I had just gotten into my car to head to 7-Eleven.
"Tell Jimmy, 'Thanks,' and if he ever gets to West Chester, I'll buy him a Slurpee."
It was Rollins' second Payoff homer of the year and his 16th all-time, tying him with Greg Luzinski for seventh place on the club.
In addition to Davidson, there were eight other winners in the contest over the weekend.
Each winning a Phillies Gift Pack in the sixth inning of yesterday's game were:
Bill Heiser, Philadelphia
Steve Forward, Philadelphia
Anthony Rokos, Conshohocken
Linda Tracey, Wilmington
Claude Sims, Philadelphia
Each winning a gift pack in the fifth inning of Saturday's game:
Byron Lockett, Philadelphia
Robert Branco, Philadelphia
Sean Tolbert, Abington
The Daily News pays $1,000 for a home run hit in the Payoff inning and $10,000 for a grand slam. Contestants whose batters fail to hit a home run receive a gift pack, which includes a variety of Phillies-related items.
This season, the Daily News has paid out $15,000 on 11 Payoff homers.
