BALTIMORE - One day after being victimized by the greatest comeback in Baltimore Orioles history, the Boston Red Sox staged an improbable rally of their own.

They used a four-run ninth inning to pull even, Julio Lugo singled in the deciding run in the 11th inning, and Jonathan Papelbon became Boston's career save leader by closing out a 6-5 victory over Baltimore.

Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon celebrates with catcher George Kottaras after a 6-5 triumph over the Orioles. Papelbon had blown a save Tuesday night.

Papelbon got three outs in the 11th for his 20th save this season and 133d with the Red Sox, breaking the team record, held by Bob Stanley.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Papelbon yielded the key hit in the eighth inning of a game in which Boston blew a 10-1 lead before losing, 11-10.

"Obviously, it feels good," Papelbon said of the record. "When I set out to be the closer of the Boston Red Sox, there were definitely a lot of goals in sight and this was one of them.

"To finally get it and get it out of my head, you know, to stop thinking about it, is definitely good for me. It's done with. Let's move on."

In this one, Red Sox pitchers retired the final 24 batters. Ty Wigginton hit a leadoff homer in the fourth off Josh Beckett to put the Orioles up by 5-1, but the drive provided Baltimore's final baserunner.

Orioles starter Brad Bergesen gave up one run, struck out six, walked none, and permitted only two runners past first base in eight innings. He was pulled after 103 pitches and with Baltimore comfortably ahead.

Then came the Boston ninth, in which Kevin Youkilis delivered a two-run homer and Rocco Baldelli a two-run single.

TORONTO - Ricky Romero pitched four-hit ball for eight innings, and Rod Barajas, Adam Lind, and Scott Rolen homered, helping Toronto end Tampa Bay's seven-game winning streak.

Romero (6-3), who took a no-hitter into the seventh in his last start, matched the longest outing of his career in winning his third straight start. He walked four, struck out seven, and lowered his ERA to 2.85.

Romero allowed just two hits through the first six innings. Jason Frasor pitched the ninth to complete the four-hitter, the Blue Jays' sixth shutout.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Joe Mauer went 3 for 3, raising his average to .392 and backing pitcher Glen Perkins (4-4) in Minnesota's victory over Kansas City.

After walking in the first inning, Mauer stroked three consecutive singles, driving in a run. His average would lead the major leagues, but his 240 plate appearances are eight shy of the 3.1 per game he needs to qualify.

Michael Cuddyer homered in the second inning for Minnesota, and an error by second baseman Alberto Callaspo in the third accounted for the deciding run.

OAKLAND, Calif. - Jason Giambi and Jack Cust broke out of funks with two-run homers, and Dallas Braden (6-7) ended a four-start winless stretch as Oakland trounced Detroit.

Giambi's drive in the sixth off Justin Verlander (8-4) was home run No. 407, tying him with Duke Snider for 43d place on the all-time list.

Giambi, who has been dealing with sore legs, entered the game with a .197 batting average, an American League low.

Cust struck out in the second - in his 80th strikeout of the year - before connecting in the fourth for his team-leading 14th homer.

CLEVELAND - Jose Contreras, shipped to the minors earlier this season, pitched eight superb innings to help Chicago rout Cleveland for its fifth straight victory.

Contreras (3-7) improved to 3-2 with a 2.17 ERA since being recalled from triple-A Charlotte after a monthlong demotion prompted by the 37-year-old's opening the season 0-5. He allowed two runs and five hits, striking out eight and walking one.

Backup catcher Ramon Castro hit a three-run homer off Jeremy Sowers (2-6) in a four-run sixth as the White Sox improved to 12-4 since June 13 to move within three games of first-place Detroit.
