Contestant wins Home Run Payoff for second time
On Aug. 5, 1988, Raimondo, then of Secane, Pa., won $2,500 when Mike Schmidt blasted the last of his record 50 Payoff home runs. (Back then, the jackpot grew each game that didn't yield a Payoff winner.)
Jayson Werth, the Phillies' hottest Payoff performer, won Betty $1,000 when he launched the second of his two home runs, a shot leading off the sixth inning of a 10-0 win over the Blue Jays in Toronto. She is the 15th individual to won Payoff cash twice. No one has won thrice, although the husband and wife team of Nick and Peggy DeLuca have combined for three cash wins.
"Yes, I heard all about it," Raimondo, 78, said when reached yesterday. "I was watching the game and listening to the radio on my earphones.
"I figured it would be Werth or [Shane] Victorino, since they are my two favorite players."
Werth would be a good bet; he has now hit seven of the last 14 Payoff Homers, dating back to last Aug. 31.
In addition to Raimondo, there were eight winners in the Daily News Home Run Payoff contest over the weekend.
Each winning a Phillies Gift Pack in the third inning of yesterday's Phillies-Blue Jays game:
Joseph Fields, Harrisburg
John Striano, Macungie
Lois Traitz, Perkiomenville
Don Habermehl, West Chester
John Bell, Annville
Each winning a gift pack in the sixth inning of the Saturday's game:
Sheryl Lillie, Vineland, N.J.
Sherie Nagy, Edgewater Park, N.J.
George Muth, Oaklyn, Pa.
The Daily News pays $1,000 for a home run hit in the Payoff inning and $10,000 for a grand slam. Contestants whose batters fail to hit a home run receive a gift pack, which includes a variety of Phillies-related items. This season, the Daily News has paid out $13,000 on nine Payoff homers.
