Baseball Notes: Piniella apologizes, Bradley plays after dugout dustup
"I apologized for the last comment I made, told him he knows in the context I meant it," Piniella said. "But I also told him that just can't continue, to have shenanigans that we've put up with. I told him he's going to hurt somebody, he's going to hurt himself."
Piniella ordered the mercurial slugger to go home Friday afternoon after Bradley threw his helmet and went after a water cooler following a fly-out in the top of the sixth inning of the Cubs game against the crosstown rival White Sox.
Bradley confirmed the Chicago Sun-Times' description of the expletive Piniella used.
"Yeah, that's exactly what he said," said Bradley, who went 1 for 5 in yesterday's Cubs loss. "But I'm not going to get into it."
Yankees. New York captain Derek Jeter and leftfielder Johnny Damon were out of the starting lineup last night because of flu.
Jeter originally was in the starting lineup for Friday night's Subway Series opener against the Mets, then was scratched and missed the game - on his 35th birthday. Manager Joe Girardi said Jeter and Damon were the latest Yankees to get sick, following Chien-Ming Wang, Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera.
Elsewhere. Reliever Jose Veras was added to Cleveland's roster and reliever Jensen Lewis was sent to triple-A Columbus. . . . Baltimore pitcher Koji Uehara, who was scratched from his scheduled start today against Washington, is expected to be placed on the disabled list with an elbow strain. . . . Texas lefthander Matt Harrison will be placed on the disabled list with biceps inflammation. . . . Righthander Ryan Sadowski will make his debut today for San Francisco, starting against the Milwaukee Brewers. He was 5-2 with a 4.11 ERA in 13 starts for triple-A Fresno.
