Nervous in New York
The Yankees' high-priced lefthander, CC Sabathia, said he would pitch Friday against the Mets. However, general manager Brian Cashman said that call would be made by manager Joe Girardi and the club's medical team.
Sabathia left during the second inning of Sunday's start against Florida with biceps tendinitis, and there is concern that it was the result of a heavy workload. The pitcher told the New York Post he was going through a "dead arm" period.
"It feels dead, but it's only achy, no pain at all," he said. "It gets sore between starts, but never before in the game."
Sabathia, who is 6-4 with a 3.71 ERA in 15 starts, has pitched 102 innings, fifth most in the majors. He threw about 120 pitches in three of his outings.
Greinke's decline
It wasn't realistic to expect Royals righthander Scott Greinke to continue dominating the way he did earlier in the season, yet it's surprising that he went 0-4 in his four starts before last night's, and had a 5.68 ERA in his previous three games.
What's up with a guy who didn't allow an earned run in his first four starts and was a Sports Illustrated cover boy?
Greinke believes it's a matter of location, saying he needs to pitch inside more frequently.
"I could do stupid stuff and it would just work," Greinke told the Kansas City Star. "Now, when I make a mistake, they capitalize on it. That's how normal pitching is."
Despite the struggles, Greinke was 8-3 with a 1.96 ERA.
