Rays, Kapler agree on deal

The American League champion Tampa Bay Rays made another move yesterday to bolster their depth and righthanded hitting, agreeing to a $1,000,018 one-year contract with outfielder Gabe Kapler.

The 33-year-old - who considers 18 his lucky number - came out of retirement last season and batted .301 with eight homers, 17 doubles, 38 RBIs and a career-best .498 slugging percentage in 96 games with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The deal with Kapler, a .273 career hitter with 72 homers and 340 RBIs, comes a week after the Rays agreed to a two-year, $16 million contract with former Phillie Pat Burrell.

Mets. Tim Redding completed his $2.25 million, one-year deal with New York. Redding made 33 starts for Washington last year and went 3-1 against the Phillies. He was 10-11 overall.

Red Sox. Boston will formally announce the signing of righthander John Smoltz at a news conference this morning. Preliminary agreement was reached last week on the deal, believed to be for one year and $5.5 million.

Braves. Omar Infante, who started 77 games at five positions last season, agreed to a $4,325,000, two-year contract, avoiding arbitration.

Japanese all-star pitcher Kenshin Kawakami, 33, was in Atlanta for a physical needed to finalize an agreement with the Braves, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations.

Brewers. Shortstop J.J. Hardy agreed to a $4.65 million, one-year contract, avoiding arbitration. The 26-year-old Hardy was a cornerstone of the Brewers' first playoff team since 1982.

Angels. Mike Scioscia's extension with Los Angeles puts the manager under contract through the 2018 season. Two people with knowledge of the negotiations said the parties agreed to a 10-year deal that allows Scioscia to opt out after the 2015 season.

Indians. Cleveland agreed to a $1.95 million, one-year contract with catcher Kelly Shoppach, extending their streak of avoiding salary arbitration to 18 years. The club last went to arbitration in 1991, with infielder Jerry Browne and pitcher Greg Swindell.
