Brett Myers is having an adventurous postseason. He has won games with his arm, his bat and his wheels.
The arm you can understand.
The bat . . . well, you've heard about the blind squirrel.
But the wheels - the footspeed - what's gotten into this guy?
"I don't know,'' Myers said with a laugh. "All I know is I about broke my ankle running the bases.''
He twisted his right ankle going first to third on a hit by Jimmy Rollins in the second inning of the Phils' 8-5 win over the Dodgers in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series yesterday afternoon.
Myers eventually scored on Shane Victorino's two-run single.
An inning later, Myers had his second of three hits and once again had to use his wheels in scoring from first on a triple by Victorino, who had a four-RBI game.
Myers' third hit was an infield single. This guy is a regular Vince Coleman.
Myers contributed more with his bat (three hits, three RBIs) and legs (two runs) than he did with his arm. He allowed five runs in five innings of work.
After leaving the game, he had a precautionary X-ray on his ankle.
"I'm fine,'' he said. "It shouldn't bother me.''
Good thing because he might be asked to pinch-run in Game 3 on Sunday.
Just kidding.
Jamie Moyer will pitch that game for the Phillies. He said that players in the dugout were amused by Myers' running of the bases yesterday. Myers is a burly fellow. He doesn't so much run as he does lumber along. As Myers sprinted around second on Rollins' second-inning hit up the middle, he looked like a defensive lineman returning a fumble for a touchdown.
Leon Lett anyone?
"I didn't know if he could stop,'' Moyer said. "When he finally got to third, the chuckling began. But until then, we were just hoping he'd make it.''
On Rollins' hit, Myers made it to third with the help of centerfielder Matt Kemp's error.
But Myers said he was going the whole way.
"I saw the ball go through and slow up,'' he said. "I was running all the way.''
Myers likes to joke around, but he's a serious competitor on the field.
"I actually take pride in my hitting and baserunning,'' he said. "In the National League, you have to do those things. They can help you win a game.''
Myers said adrenaline fueled his journey from first to home after Victorino's triple in the third.
