Phillies playoff datebook
Oct. 8, 1983, Veterans Stadium
Phillies 7, Dodgers 2
Gary Matthews homered in the early going for the third consecutive game, belting a three-run shot off Jerry Reuss in the first inning, more than enough runs for starter Steve Carlton (0.66 ERA for the series) and the Phillies bullpen. Just to make it easy, Mike Schmidt doubled home one run and scored another in the fourth inning and Sixto Lezcano iced the cake with a two-run homer of his own in the sixth as the Phillies eased into their second World Series in 4 years, topping LA three games to one.
Fun Fact: In nine career LCS games (also 1985 with the Cubs), Matthews belted five homers.
