Myers struggles in loss to Mets

NEW YORK - The Phillies hoped that Brett Myers had rediscovered his swagger and fastball in the minor leagues.

It's too early to tell whether the swagger is back for good.

He showed early that the fastball is not.

Myers, making his first start for the Phillies since June 27, threw his fastball often last night in a 6-3 loss to the New York Mets at Shea Stadium, but he rarely threw it for strikes. His lack of command proved costly as the Phils fell into a first-place tie with the Mets in the National League East.

"I think right now we need some more looks at him," manager Charlie Manuel said. "I think he definitely deserves a shot to get his command down."

Myers walked four consecutive batters on 20 pitches in the first inning as the Mets took a 2-0 lead. In five innings, he allowed three hits, three runs and five walks. He also hit a batter and struck out two.

"I felt like if that first inning didn't go that way, we would have won the game," Myers said. "I probably would have pitched nine innings, the way I felt tonight. Unfortunately, it didn't go that way."

No, it didn't.

Myers threw 29 pitches in the first inning, just nine for strikes. In the third inning, he walked David Wright, hit Carlos Delgado with a pitch, and allowed a single to Carlos Beltran to load the bases with one out. Wright eventually scored to make it 3-2.

Myers pitched more effectively in the fourth and fifth innings, but by then his pitch count had reached 95 and Manuel figured he would put the ball into Ryan Madson's hand. But Madson, who entered the night 2-0 with a 2.66 ERA, allowed a three-run homer to Jose Reyes in the sixth to make it 6-3.

It certainly hurt that Myers couldn't find the strike zone and that Madson left a first-pitch change-up high in the zone, but the Phillies continued to struggle offensively. They managed just six hits, although they hit some balls hard early.

But this was Myers' night, good or bad. The Phillies optioned him to the minors last month because they desperately needed somebody to complement Cole Hamels atop the rotation and thought some time in the minors could help make Myers that pitcher again.

He will need to show he can be that pitcher in his next few starts.

"I felt 10 times better" than June 27, Myers said. "I just wish I could have thrown my fastball for strikes. It caught up to me. I definitely feel like if I can do that in my next start, I'll be fine.

"I think that's going to happen with my work ethic. If I keep working, it's going to happen. I don't take anything bad from this start, except for the first inning. It could have been different."

The Phillies hope his next start is.

This is getting very tiring...

Not as tiring as missing the playoffs for the next few years because they don't have pitching. Take a nap. Do you forget that this guy is our staff Ace? No Myers = unlikely playoffs or, at best, an early exit. He pitched pretty well for years and deserve a chance to work on his control. He was throwing strikes in the minors. Little early to give up on our Ace. We can't replace him or trade him for anything. He needs to lose the gut.

He's far from an Ace.

Or as tiring as ding bat comments..Ace? Myers? Thats like calling Ruiz a slugger..

We need a number one starter. The Brewers get Sabathia and we get some slob from the A's. The Giants aren't going anywhere. Trade Dobbs and JA Happ for Linecum. Heck, throw in Ruiz too. He stinks.

Until those bums start hitting the ball it does not matter what kind of pitching we have, we wont win anything.

You must be crazy....there's no way in the world the Giants will give up Lincecum for the slop you're offering. Howard might get you Lincecum but Dobbs, Happ and Ruiz....please be for real and have a clue before you propose a moronic trade like that. We don't need an ace we have one what we need is a solid #2 to go with him. And fat Joe Blanton ain't gonna cut it.

No team needs a pitcher who requires psychological band aids just to be decent. Why do we hear about the great young guys but they are NEVER ready yet. Time to bring them up and to let the Myers experiment go. The phillies organization feels an obligation to this guy because he moved from reliver to starter as they asked, but this should end now. Inconsistent pitchers do not help a club. Also....the philies cannot keep talking and acting like they won the NL East by ten games. They won partialy because of the Mets default and then looked terrible againsttthe Rocks. Some of these players like Choke Utley who disappeared in the playoffs last year also disapppear in the bigger games during the season. It's not time to clean house but it is time to get someone with a Rowand like attitude and the parts to back it up in that dugout. If a star has to go with Myers and Youngsters have to learn ot pitch in the majors so be it.

Manuel hinted at it weeks ago that Myers never really was that great... "14-9 was his best season, not exactly lighting it up" as Cholly put it. I'll add 4.30 or so career ERA. A fastball that is generally 90 mph and inaccurate. And basically, he seems to have no plan out there or can't execute it. They seriously gave him 12 million a year? What were they thinking?

Myers set the "tone" for the game last night....he did not do a good job or set the right tone......it was painful to watch him struggle and wince and stretch to try to find a way to get comfortable on the mound. I know he's been medially checked out but his body language reeks of someone who is battling thru an injury and has no clue as to why the ball won't go where he's throwing it......labrum or UCL are the most likely culprits......he's evidently not hurt bad enough to have pain, but it is affecting his performance....and his team. You can't keep spotting your rivals 2-3 runs in the 1st inning of every game. The offense is mentally tired of it.....exhausted of playing catch-up....right from the get-go.

Hamels is all we got, and they never score any runs when he pitches. Meyers's wife had to be shaking in her boots after he walked 4 straight. You know she got rolled last night. Wife beater could not have been too pleased about thet performance.

Splat you are too crude. Myers isn't a starter anymore. Put him in Gordon's spot and bring Happ up. Call up Carasco in the fall and lets see. The bats....we can only hope. No fix there.

The front office has hinged the hopes of this season on the re-emergence of Brett Myers? Nice plan. Is that wit or wittout psychiatrist? I just wonder, if Carrasco is so untouchable, why is he not up with the big team? If Marson is so untouchable, why can't he be better than Ruiz? And does this team have a third baseman? How can anyone really be disappointed losing series to the Marlins, Mets, etc.? The Phils, headcase hitters and all, are simply not good enough.

BDUNF thank you and I couldn't agree with you more. B Atkinson needs to get a clue and understand how baseball and baseball trades work before throwing out idiotic trade proposals. Posters like him are the reason why blogs don't always work.
