High & Inside: NL Notes

Just luck?

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the Mets have won 11 of 13 and now have made it a pennant race since firing manager Willie Randolph on June 17.

Brewers keep adding

Milwaukee got veteran second baseman Ray Durham from the Giants after the two teams played yesterday. Durham was in a Giants uniform but did not play, then left town with the Brewers for St. Louis afterward.

San Francisco received lefthander Steve Hammond and outfielder Darren Ford.

Milwaukee, chasing a postseason berth for the first time since Harvey's Wallbangers (named for manager Harvey Kuenn) in 1982, had already made the biggest trade of the season, acquiring star pitcher CC Sabathia from Cleveland.

The Brewers are three games behind the Cubs in the NL Central.

Durham was batting .293 with three homers and 32 RBIs. Trading him could be just the start of several moves by the Giants in the coming weeks. Lefthanded reliever Jack Taschner's name also has been brought up in trade talk.

So if you hear of a team looking for a lefthanded reliever, be sure to let it know.

Slugfest

If you're a fan of hitting, and aren't much for defense or taut pitching duels, you might want to check out tonight's Pirates game at Houston.

Pittsburgh will send righthander John Van Benschoten to the mound. The Astros will counter with righty Runelvys Hernández.

Van Benschoten is 1-2 with a 9.77 ERA this season, and a 12.27 ERA in his last three starts. Hernández is 0-3 with a 10.29 ERA and a truly stupendous 22.50 ERA against the Buccos this season.

Moves

Los Angeles signed former Chicago White Sox infielder Pablo Ozuna and designated infielder Luis Maza for assignment. . . . Arizona activated catcher Chris Snyder from the 15-day disabled list.

Rehabbing

Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano will begin a rehab assignment today with Chicago's rookie league team in Mesa, Ariz., and is expected to come off the disabled list Thursday.

Soriano has been on the DL since June 12 because of a broken left hand. He took batting practice in Houston on Friday and felt good enough afterward to target a return this week.

If all goes well today, Soriano will play with triple-A Iowa in Tucson, Ariz., tomorrow, and could rejoin the Cubs for their four-game series against Florida beginning Thursday at Wrigley Field.
