ATLANTA - The Phillies yesterday agreed to terms with shortstop
Anthony Hewitt, their first-round pick last month.
Hewitt, 19, received a $1.38 million bonus, and the team agreed to pay for eight semesters of a college program. He will report to Clearwater, Fla., later this week.
The Phillies have signed 27 of their 53 draft picks, including the first five.

The Phillies bought the contract of
R.J. Swindle, a lefthanded reliever with triple-A Lehigh Valley. He is expected to join the team today. Manager
Charlie Manuel said that did not mean the Phillies will find a replacement for
Brett Myers on their 25-man roster. They are an arm short because
Clay Condrey's wife,
Elizabeth, gave birth to a boy,
Cashton, on Monday night. Condrey isn't expected to rejoin the team until tomorrow. Swindle, 24, is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 29 appearances between double-A Reading and Lehigh Valley. In 40 innings, he has struck out 48 and walked six. . . . Bench coach
Jimy Williams returned after being gone since June 22 for personal reasons.
