Services for Marzano are to be held Friday

A Funeral Mass for former major-league catcher John Marzano will be held Friday at Annunciation BVM Church, 10th and Dickinson Streets in Philadelphia.

Mr. Marzano, 45, was a former Central High and Temple University star who became a big-league catcher and a sports broadcaster. He was found dead Saturday at his Passayunk Avenue home.

An autopsy was performed yesterday, but the cause of death remained undetermined pending tests, according to Jeff Moran, spokesman for the Medical Examiner's Office.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. at the Baldi/Pennsylvania Funeral Home, Broad and Reed Streets. The Funeral Mass will follow on Friday. Burial will be at Holy Family Cemetery in Yeadon.

Contributions may be made to a fund at PNC Bank being set up for Mr. Marzano's two grandchildren. Arrangements are being made.

Police said Mr. Marzano was found about noon in the doorway of his home by a family member, who called police. It was not known whether he had fallen or suffered a heart attack. Authorities said there was no indication the death was suspicious.

Mr. Marzano spent 10 years in the majors with Boston, Texas and Seattle. He worked for WIP-AM (610) and Comcast SportsNet before joining MLB.com.

The Phillies observed a moment of silence for Mr. Marzano at Citizens Bank Park before last night's game with the New York Mets.

Dick Polman: Let's try to guess whom John McCain picks as his running mate. It's fun to speculate - even though, if history is any guide, we'll probably all be wrong.

Still, we can learn a lot about McCain's candidacy, and the daunting challenges that he faces, simply by playing the veepstakes.

For starters, we probably should excise the candidates McCain reportedly covets the most. Tom Ridge, for instance. McCain really likes the guy, by all accounts.
