Phillies Notes

Phillies' Myers determined to stay aggressive

Brett Myers did not pitch like himself in his first two starts. It showed in the numbers.

He was 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA after two starts, but he is 2-0 with a 2.40 ERA in his two games since. Yesterday, he allowed five hits, one run, and one walk in seven innings of a 10-2 victory over the Houston Astros. He struck out eight, a season high for Phillies pitchers.

"Every five days, I get to go out there to prove to the team that I can keep competing," Myers said. "I don't like going out there and rolling over on anybody, so I want to go out there and actually be the aggressor of the game and set the tempo early.

"My bullpen [warm-up] today was terrible. I think that's what helped me focus, because nothing was going right. My pitches weren't going anywhere I wanted them to. When I saw Michael Bourn step in [in the first inning], that's when I decided to lock it in."

MRI exam for Rollins

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who has not been in the starting lineup since April 8 because of a sprained left ankle, underwent an MRI exam before he flew to California yesterday for his uncle's funeral. The Phillies ordered the test for "informational purposes" to make sure the ankle is healing as expected.

They said it is.

"The MRI results basically confirmed exactly what we were treating him for," assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He's got a sprained ankle, and he's healing and he's doing quite well. We have no plans to put him on the DL. Jimmy is progressing and doing better. . . . We do believe that he should be ready to play, hopefully, Saturday or Sunday. That's what we're hopeful for. We're not sure if he's actually going to play those days, but we think he's progressing toward that."

Rollins will attend the funeral today. He is expected back in uniform tomorrow.

Big day for Coste

Catcher Chris Coste tied a career high with four hits. He went 4 for 5 with a double, capping the day with a two-run homer off Astros closer Jose Valverde in the eighth inning.

Coste is hitting .400 (8 for 20) with two home runs and four RBIs. Catcher Carlos Ruiz is hitting .186 (8 for 43) with no homers and no RBIs.

It's unclear if Coste has earned another start tonight based on his play and Ruiz's struggles.

"I'll kind of make that decision probably tomorrow," manager Charlie Manuel said. "There's no sense in rushing into it. We'll let Coste think about it for a while."

The shuffle continues

With Rollins and Shane Victorino (strained right calf) still unavailable, Manuel used his seventh combination for the top two spots in the lineup. Centerfielder So Taguchi hit leadoff and third baseman Greg Dobbs was second.

Taguchi (.286) went 2 for 5 and scored a run. Dobbs (.250) went 2 for 5 and scored twice. Taguchi is expected to be in the lineup tonight against New York Mets lefthander Johan Santana.

Extra bases

The band Drowning Pool met with Myers and closer Brad Lidge before the game. Drowning Pool was in town for a concert last night in Atlantic City, and Myers and Lidge have Drowning Pool tunes as intro music. . . . The Phillies were 5-11 at this point last season. . . . The Bank is sold out for tonight's and tomorrow's games against the Mets. Some tickets remain for Sunday's series finale. There are three events tonight at the sports complex: Phillies vs. Mets, Phantoms vs. Albany River Rats at the Wachovia Center, and the circus at the Wachovia Spectrum. Fans are encouraged to take public transportation.
