RED SOX 7, YANKEES 5

NEW YORK - Manny Ramirez hit two more homers off an ineffective Mike Mussina, leading Josh Beckett and the Boston Red Sox past the perturbed New York Yankees, 7-5, last night in a game that nearly got testy.

With Ramirez enjoying his latest outburst against his favorite foe, Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth threw a 97 m.p.h. fastball behind the slugger's neck on the first pitch of the seventh inning, drawing cheers from the sellout crowd of 55,088 at Yankee Stadium.

Ramirez flinched and dropped his bat, but never made a motion toward the mound.

Plate umpire Larry Vanover immediately warned both dugouts, and Ramirez eventually grounded out to second. The Red Sox never retaliated.

Ramirez hit his 494th home run in the first, passing Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for sole possession of 24th place on the career list, then added No. 495 an inning later with a mammoth two-run shot to left.

That gave Ramirez, who likes to admire his prodigious drives, five homers this season - three in six days off Mussina (1-3). It also gave the slugger 13 hits in his last 26 at-bats against the righthander, with four homers and 11 RBIs.

Ramirez finished with three hits for the second consecutive night and scored three times.

J.D. Drew added a two-run double for the Red Sox, who earned a two-game split after losing, 15-9, Wednesday night in a plodding game that took more than four hours.

Boston won for the fifth time in six tries and snapped a five-game skid at Yankee Stadium.

RANGERS 4, BLUE JAYS 1

TORONTO - Former Phillie Vicente Padilla pitched seven strong innings, Ian Kinsler had three hits, and Texas beat Toronto to hand the Blue Jays their fifth straight home defeat.

Rangers outfielder David Murphy went 3 for 4 with three doubles. He scored twice and drove in a run and Texas won its second straight following a five-game losing streak.

Padilla (2-1) allowed one run and seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

The last time Toronto dropped five straight at home was April 20-24, 2005.

The game came one night after 16 pitchers were needed for a 14-inning, four-hour, 53-minute game.

BALTIMORE - Adam Jones singled in the game-winning run in the 10th inning, capping a late comeback that gave Baltimore a victory over Chicago.

Baltimore trailed, 5-2, in the eighth before rallying. Kevin Millar led off the 10th with a walk, and later scored from second without a throw when Jones lashed a liner inside the left-field line.

INDIANS 11, TIGERS 1

CLEVELAND - Fausto Carmona allowed a run in 62/3 innings, Ryan Garko and Travis Hafner hit two-run homers, and Cleveland beat Detroit.

Tigers righthander Justin Verlander remained winless in four starts, falling to 0-3. He allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings. Verlander walked four and struck out one.

Carmona (2-1), who walked eight in 31/3 innings in his last start against Oakland, gave up seven hits, struck out two, and walked one.

Former Phillie Jason Michaels drove in three runs, while Garko, Hafner and Jamey Carroll had two RBIs apiece for the Indians, who had lost six of seven. Every Cleveland starter had at least one hit.

The game featured five hit batters - two by Verlander, two in a row by Carmona, and one by Tigers reliever Bobby Seay.

After Verlander hit Garko in the second and Michaels in the fifth, Carmona opened the sixth by hitting Ramon Santiago on the foot. On the next pitch, he hit Gary Sheffield in the hip.

RAYS 7, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS - Jason Hammel had his second straight strong outing, Nathan Haynes' single keyed a four-run rally and Tampa Bay beat Minnesota to split the two-game series.

In six innings, Hammel (1-1) allowed six hits and three runs while striking out five to help the Rays end a three-game losing streak. He allowed two earned runs in a career-best seven innings Saturday against Baltimore.

This time he got some help from an offense that had generated just two runs in his previous two starts. Rays hitters tallied more than that in one inning against the Twins.

Up by 3-2, Tampa Bay batted around and scored four times in the fifth inning to chase Minnesota starter Boof Bonser.
