But so far, the Real Deal hasn't had the spring he probably had hoped for. In 31/3 innings yesterday in a 9-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at McKechnie Field, Durbin allowed eight hits, five runs and two walks. He struck out one. But Durbin, who is competing for a spot in the rotation or bullpen, could use a little more success in his quest to make the Phillies' 25-man roster.
He is 0-2 with a 9.64 ERA.
"That's the game - competition," Durbin said. "It's what we thrive on. It's what we're here for. It's not . . . cutting time, but I think it's maybe time to put up some better numbers. Try to put a little pressure on myself to make myself better."
Manager Charlie Manuel would like to see some better numbers, too.
"I'd say now is a big time for them," he said. "I hear when they say they feel good and they're throwing good and stuff like that - somewhere along the line we've got to start holding them. People look at these games and say they don't count. But every time you pick up a ball to pitch, these games count for you. For you personally, they count."
Now that is the real deal.
