Phillies Notes: For Mathieson, good health report

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Pitcher Scott Mathieson received a positive report from California-based orthopedist Lewis Yocum: The Phillies righthander does not need more surgery.

An examination showed that Mathieson had strained his surgically repaired right elbow. He has rested for the last two weeks and will begin a throwing program today. The goal is to have him pitching to hitters by mid-March, the Phillies said.

Mathieson, who had elbow surgery in each of the last two Septembers, is still hoping to pitch in the minors, in Reading or Lehigh Valley, by the start of the season.

"I want to spend the least amount of time I can in Florida," said Mathieson, who has spent much of the last year and a half rehabbing in Clearwater.

Mathieson, 23, was so faithful to his rehab program that he sought out a high school catcher and pitched a bullpen session on his honeymoon in Hawaii last month.

His wife, Jen, sounds like a keeper.

Pitchers get going

Pitchers, still limbering up, threw batting practice for the first time yesterday. Pat Burrell took Kyle Kendrick deep.

Still, manager Charlie Manuel loves the sink on Kendrick's fastball. "Everything comes in nose-down," he said.

Manuel was impressed with lefthander Jamie Moyer.

"He was carving them up, putting the ball right where he wanted to," Manuel said.

Quote of the day

Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran says his club is the team to beat in the NL East.

"The only thing I've got to say about that is we'll let our Louisville Sluggers talk," Manuel said.
