Madson injures shoulder, goes on DL

With the good comes the bad. That basically puts the Phillies' season in a nutshell.

After they finally appeared to have their injury-riddled bullpen bandaged together with Brett Myers returning from a 2-month stint on the disabled list Saturday night, the Phillies lost another pitcher.

This time it was middle reliever Ryan Madson who was the victim, suffering what the team called a strained right shoulder in the eighth inning of a 5-1 victory over Pittsburgh yesterday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

In the clubhouse after the game, Madson said he was convinced he had torn a muscle.

"I felt it and heard it tear," said Madson, who is 2-2 with a 3.05 ERA. "I'm not a doctor or anything but I know I won't be pitching [tonight]."

The Phillies have placed Madson on the 15-day disabled list and have recalled Geoff Geary from Triple A Ottawa. Geary, who was demoted June 30, will join the team today in Chicago, where the Phillies open a four-game series against the Cubs tonight. Madson will remain in Philadelphia to have an MRI exam this morning.

Madson, who has the same injury that kept Myers sidelined, left the game after throwing an 0-2 pitch to Jason Bay with two outs in the eighth.

When he will pitch next is uncertain. Madson admitted that his shoulder had been bothering him for at least a week but believed he could pitch through it.

"It didn't feel like anything abnormal," he said. "I just thought I could throw through it like everyone else has."

Fellow reliever Tom Gordon tried to pitch through shoulder pain during the latter half of last season and early this season. But he finally was placed on the 60-day disabled list because of an inflamed right rotator cuff and slightly torn labrum. Since returning, Gordon has made four appearances.

Madson said this was the first time he has ever torn a muscle. He was on the 15-day DL in May with a left oblique strain.

"It's hard, especially with us finally getting everyone back from injury," Madson said. "On top of that, we are playing great. This is baseball, and things like this happen. I know the next guy will step in and do a great job."

Geary struggled in his last two outings before being sent to Ottawa. He allowed five earned runs, seven hits and recorded a blown save in his final 2 1/3 innings before being demoted.

In 17 2/3 innings with Ottawa, Geary was 1-1 with a 2.04 ERA. He gave up 18 hits and just four earned runs while striking out 18 and walking none.

Before the start of yesterday's game, lightning struck just above the stadium lights towering over leftfield. The impact of the bolt left the video scoreboard scrambled for minutes before it finally was reset by the first pitch. The start of the game was delayed 12 minutes because of rain . . .
